William E. “Bill” Van Horn, 76, of Dover, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2021 in Community Hospice Truman House at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.

Born in Akron, he was the son of the late Elon H. and Edith E. (Theobald) Van Horn and a 1962 graduate of Coventry High School. Following high school, Bill served in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country in Vietnam until he was honorably discharged.

Bill formerly attended the United Methodist Church at Green and was a member of the New Philadelphia VFW Post 1445. He enjoyed reading, bird watching, working in his garden and cooking. A beach bum at heart, he loved being near the ocean and vacationing in Ocean Isle, North Carolina. However, what he enjoyed the most was spending time with his family.

On May 15, 1965, in Cuyahoga Falls, Bill married Peg A. (Weitzel) Van Horn and together celebrated over 56 years of marriage before Bill’s passing.

Also surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth (Robert) Hill of Newcomerstown and Jennifer (Shawn) Green of Wadsworth; a son, Christopher Van Horn and his fiancé Elizabeth Lamb of Owensboro, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Andrew Hill, Kiley (Dylan) Good, Hill, Allyson Green and Joseph Green; two step-grandchildren, Kerry Green and Dani Anderson; a great grandson, Brady Good and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of twin great grandchildren, a boy and a girl.

In addition to his parents, a brother, Robert Van Horn, also preceded him in death.

In keeping with his wishes, Bill is to be cremated through the care of the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. The New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military honors during a private family celebration of Bill’s life that will be held at a later date.

To honor Bill’s memory and his service to his country, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either, The American Lung Association at www.lung.org, or, to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.

I was blessed with an amazing dad! He taught me how to fish, ride a bike, throw a ball, identify birds, read music, tell a good scary story, how to spend time with my own children. He was thoughtful and forgave easily. He was a prankster- and I am proud to have called him Dad! So much of him is being lived out through my own parenting- and I am thankful for all the wonderful memories I have! Love you always, Dad! ?
