February 13, 1926 — January 22, 2019

Wayne Emerson Mizer, 92, of Stone Creek, died peacefully while surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 in Union Hospital at Dover.

A son of the late Charles Emerson and Goldie Muriel (Kohler) Mizer, Wayne was born February 13, 1926 in his childhood home in York Township.

Wayne graduated from Stone Creek High School in 1944. He was then drafted into the United States Army on October 24, 1944 and served in the European Theatre during World War II. Wayne would then receive his honorable discharge on August 6, 1946.

On September 12, 1948, he married the former Arlene Hoffman and they raised two children, Jeffrey Wayne and Melanie Jane. The couple were members of the former Grace United Church of Christ at Stone Creek, where Wayne was very active, and later they became members of Jerusalem Church at New Philadelphia.

He was a longtime carpenter by trade and was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. Over the years, Wayne worked at the construction sites of many notable buildings and structures throughout the area.

Wayne was a man who liked to be busy and following his retirement he took up various hobbies such as woodcarving, gardening and part-time farming. He was also an avid reader who was always learning. Most evenings would end for Wayne by following his favorite sports teams, The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Arlene Mizer; his children, Jeffrey Wayne (Kay) Mizer of Paxtonville, Pennsylvania and Melanie Jane (Jim) Grella of Canton; his grandchildren, Jonathan (Melissa) Mizer of Stone Creek, Jared (Jessica) Mizer of Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pennsylvania, Jesse (Andrea) Mizer of Middleburg, Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Mizer of Port Trevorton, Pennsylvania, Nathan (Amanda) Grella of Ft. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gilbert Mizer.
