Wauneta Hicks

February 9, 1938 — January 25, 2018

Wauneta A. Hicks, 79, of New Philadelphia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 25, 2018 following a period of declining health.

Born in Cambridge, Kansas on February 9, 1938, she was the daughter of the late John Quinton and Gladys Vela (Sumner) Wesbrooks.

After completing her formal education, Wauneta married her lifelong partner and friend, Virgil Hayes Hicks, on July 30, 1961 in the First United Methodist Church in Dover.

Wauneta was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who loved caring for her family. Gardening was an activity she enjoyed, as well as sewing. A talented seamstress, she sewed the wedding dresses and attendants’ gowns for several of her daughters’ weddings. Wauneta also shared her talent as a pianist with the First Christian Church where she accompanied the church choir. Even as her sight diminished, she could always sit down at the piano and make beautiful music. Wauneta’s membership at the Faith Christian Church later in her life was of great importance to her also.

Wauneta will be deeply missed by her family including her husband, Virgil; her four daughters, Cheryl (Don) Russell, Brenda (Mike) Warner, Jill Hicks all of New Philadelphia, and Sharon (Shawn) Meek of Navarre; her grandchildren, David (Leah) Russell, Laura Russell, Matt Warner, Andy Russell, and Emily Warner; her great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Russell; her brothers-in-law, Ward Hicks and Foster (Roberta) Hicks both of New Philadelphia; her sister-in-law, Grace Kohler of New Philadelphia; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Wauneta was preceded in passing by her daughter, Elizabeth Hicks; and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Franklin Hicks, Mary Ferrall, Evelyn Moore, Lester Hicks, and Bill Hicks; and her parents-in-law, William H. and Jenny Hicks.

Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Monday, January 29, 2018 from 1 to 4 PM, with her service beginning at 4 PM led by Pastor Brian Flood.

Memorial contributions in Wauneta’s memory may be directed to the Faith Christian Church, 2012 Pleasant Valley Rd NE, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
