Ted Metcalf

Ted Metcalf, 89, of New Philadelphia, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2021 in his home following a period of declining health.

Born September 20, 1931 in New Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Raymond “Curly” and Freda M. (McKnight) Metcalf. Ted was a United States Army veteran having served in both Italy and the Pacific during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, Ted began working at Gradall where he worked as a welder and a material handler. He retired following 38 years of service to the company.

Ted had attended the Midvale United Methodist Church and was also a life member of the New Philadelphia VFW Post #1445. He was a former coach and manager of the Glass Lumber Little League team and had also coached the East Elementary School basketball team to the city championship. In his spare time, he also enjoyed fishing, watching NASCAR races and macrame.

On May 1, 1954, he married his wife, Delores J. (Mazzalini) Metcalf and together shared over 66 years of marriage before his passing. Also surviving are his children, Kay (Allen) Shanabrook, Teddy (Missy) Metcalf and Frank (Sandra) Metcalf all of New Philadelphia; eight grandchildren, David (Kellie) Shanabrook, Kristen (Joe) Parker and Daniel (Natalie) Shanabrook, Amy Gilland, Samantha (Chris) Anderson and Adam Metcalf and T.J. and Matt Metcalf and 14 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, his son, Todd Alan Metcalf, his step-father, Nicholas DeNicola, and his siblings, Jim Metcalf, Jack Metcalf, Buster Metcalf and Sandra Creamer also precede him in death.

In keeping with Ted’s wishes, he is to be cremated through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A private family graveside service will be held in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia where the New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military honors.

It was Ted’s wish that memorial contributions be made to either the Ohio Parkinson Foundation, North East Region, P.O. Box 31907, Independence, Ohio 44131-4854, or, the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601.
