Today, January 24, 2020, I lost my best friend and the love of my life, Susan Goodie, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. I was blessed to share a wonderful life with her for over forty years, the last 34 as husband and wife. We both loved sharing the simple things in life and while neither of us were funny people, we made each other laugh.

Susan was an intelligent, selfless, and giving person who managed to raise three strong, independent daughters while working full-time as a professional civil engineer in the construction department at ODOT. She cherished the friendships she had with several long-time co-workers during her 34 years with District 11. She continued to work after being eligible to retire in order to help support her daughters as they pursued advanced degrees in their chosen fields.

Susan graduated at the top of her high school class of 1980 and with honors from Ohio University. She instilled the value of education in her daughters who followed in her footsteps. To fulfill one of her wishes, a memorial scholarship will be established for young women pursuing a career in engineering or a related field.

We traveled through life side by side enjoying our small-town park with our young girls, many dance recitals, and wonderful vacations together. In her spare time, she loved working outdoors, baking cookies to share with friends, as well as sending countless cards of congratulations or encouragement to people throughout the community. I will love her always for her great strength and character. She made me a better person – for which I will be forever grateful.

One of the great joys of life in her later years was getting to be a grandmother. Life rarely goes as planned, but the time we were able to spend with Emerson was a great gift and blessing in our lives. She cherished her granddaughter with all of her heart.

Susan was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on several committees throughout the years. Her faith will open the gates of Heaven to eternal life.

A daughter of Robert Graham and the late Elizabeth (Fabiano) Graham, she is survived by siblings Sharie Graham, Thomas Graham, and Sandra Graham. A brother, Robert, is deceased.

She will never be forgotten and will be lovingly and sadly missed by your husband, Greg, daughter Peyton and fiancé Dan Ritter, daughter Paige, daughter Preston and husband Michael Cornell, and granddaughter, Emerson Cornell.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2020 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia. Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Quaker Foundation, PO Box 627, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663, The First United Methodist Church, 201 W High Ave., New Philadelphia, or Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave SW, New Philadelphia.

I recently learned about Susan's death and am deeply saddened and send my condolences to all of you. We were good friends during high school and continued to stay in touch after I moved to Florida with my family my senior year. Over the past 40 years we periodically called each other and exchanged e-mails. I also always enjoyed reading her handwritten notes that she sent with her annual Christmas card. She had asked for prayers when we visited the Holy Land last year, but did not share about her illness -- thus I did not know until now why. She always shared how much she loved her family. Thus, I wanted to share the last e-mail I received from Susan. She will be greatly missed! On Wednesday, June 19, 2019, 8:39:21 PM EDT, Susan Goodie wrote: Hi Julie, Hope all is well with your family as well. Thanks for contacting me. Actually my 2 daughters are flying in for the weekend! Unfortunately we don’t get to see them much. And of course we we will see Preston & Emerson as well. So it will be a pretty busy weekend. But I sure am looking forward to it!

Dear Greg, I was a student in NPHS 1980 with the two of you, and I remember you both as being really great people (as well as great students), and I know you were the perfect couple. Even though I moved away from the area many years ago, my Mom, Shirley Wagner, has mentioned you and your daughters to me on a number of occasions, as you were neighbors for a number of years. May God Bless you and your family at this difficult time and help you to cherish the memories you keep in your heart. You are in my prayers.

Just learned of Susan's passing and was upset to hear about it. We worked in the same department at ODOT for decades where I often talked to her concerning construction matters, but we always managed to have a few comical conversations about our jobs and friends. Susan will be sadly missed. I just watched the tribute video and was very touched by it.

I've known Greg and Susan since junior high and am so happy to have called them friends. I will always take credit for the two of them having become a couple. And I contend that, had she not gotten her vision corrected, she would have chosen me over him. To me, Susan was a beautiful person on the inside and outside. She was a sweet, gentle person, but she also had a strong personality. She was smart (wrecked every curve in every class I ever had with her). She was thoughtful; still have the holiday cards she would send us each year with photos of the girls as they grew. No surprise that she was a great mother and produced such beautiful, accomplished daughters. Due to time, space, families, jobs, hadn't kept in touch much recently, but thought about her and Greg often. In fact, had just thought about giving them a call over the holidays just to say hi, but didn't. Wish I had. Lost a good friend and better person. Need to do a better job of staying in touch with the few that I have left. Wishing Greg, the girls and the Graham family strength in this time of sorrow.

Joseph T Ansel posted on 1/27/20

Greg, Peyton, Paige, and Preston, The Ansel's send our love to all of you. Words cannot express the sadness we are feeling about losing Susan. She was an amazing woman and created an awesome family. Keep that beautiful grin of hers alive in your hearts. God gained an amazing servant and he will put her immediately to work on creating even more joy in Heaven. All our hearts are aching, but stay strong and rally around her memory and maintain the Goodie Family Strength that she anchored in her own way. We're all so sorry.

I had the honor of knowing and working around Susan since the early 1980's when she was a summer student. Everyone at ODOT always said "we need thirty more just like her". I never heard Susan say an unkind word about anyone. Susan was a rare example of someone with true class. She leaves a legacy for those young ladies that her and Greg raised. So sorry for your loss.

Dear Greg. Peyton, Paige, Preston, Emerson and family.... please know prayers are being spoken for each of you as you mourn this precious lady you all loved so very much!! Susan blessed everyone she came across....her smile was amazing!! Just a beautiful kind person that made this place better!!! I have a note that Susan sent to me in April 2005. I hope this little note will help you.....April 23, 2005...…( her mother had just passed away suddenly and I was able to share what I went through with her with my mom passed away in 2000) Debbie, God must have been looking after me on Thursday and wanted to help comfort me. When I first came to the post office there wasn't much parking. I drove by and wasn't going to stop. My mind is foggy and numb and I thought just keep going. But then something made me go around the block, find a parking place to find Bill and you inside. Although my heart feels broken with a huge void and overwhelming pain right now, it is encouraging to know that others care, understand and do manage to get through it. I received your beautiful card and letter later that same day. I can only say "Thank You" for your kindness and comforting words. they mean so very much and will be remembered as I begin to heal from his very sad and difficult time and face my forever changed life. Your are such a loving, giving and special lady. So glad that God led me to see you on Thursday. Please take care of your self and family. God bless you all. thanks again. With love and affection, Susan (Susan's mother had passed away and my mother passed away 5 years earlier, so somehow I was able to bring her some sort of comfort with what I had shared with her that day at the Post Office. It was all God that is for sure.) Death is not the end of your sweet Susan!! Death is the door to Eternity. Rather that death being the end of her life it is the birthday for her into Eternal Life. ( I shared this with her from the book ..The Purpose Driven Life it seemed to help her with the loss of her mom. I hope it will help each of you as well) Much love and prayers for your entire family.... May God bring comfort to each of your broken hearts. I know He will.... Debbie and Bill Abel

Our deepest sympathy to you,Greg and your beautiful girls. My memories of Susan began in 2nd grade when my family moved to the “south side” and we were neighbors and classmate. Our friendship continued through grade school, junior high and high school. Upon getting my driver’s license I was permitted to drive the family station wagon to school and every morning stop at the Graham’s house to pick up Susan, Bobby, Tommy and Sandy. I remember our senior class trip to Cedar Point and hearing rumors that Greg Goodie and Susan Graham we’re walking around the park holding hands. Later our paths crossed again when Preston and Sarah began kindergarten and became good friends. Then a few years later we were blessed with the Goodie’s becoming our next door neighbors. Susan will forever be held near and dear to our hearts. She will be remembered for always giving while asking for nothing in return - and of course her delicious cookie platters - all our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family
