Steven T. Stewart, 69, of New Philadelphia, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 9, 2020.

A son of the late Richard “Dick” and Ethelyn “Peg” (Dixon) Stewart, Steve was born July 28, 1951 at Dover, Ohio.

Steve graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1969. At a young age, he started working in the family business, Scott Supply at New Philadelphia, and retired in 2016 after more than 40 years of selling and servicing outdoor power equipment.

He was an active member of The First Church of the Brethren at New Philadelphia and was active over the years with Boy Scouts and served as a leader for Troop #90. In his spare time, Steve enjoyed fishing, vacationing at Emerald Island, North Carolina, listening to Cleveland Indians games on the radio and attending New Philadelphia High School basketball games. More than anything he cherished spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen (Torgler) Stewart, whom he married on September 12, 1976; his children, Ryan (Jamie) Stewart of Dover and Sara (Steve) Newman of New Philadelphia; two grandsons, Benjamin and Jonathan Stewart; a sister, Bonny Wilson of New Philadelphia; two brothers, Richard “Rick” Stewart of Arizona and Gary (Diana) Stewart of New Philadelphia; his mother-in-law, Zoa Torgler of New Philadelphia; a sister-in-law, Karen Dunfee of Dover and two nephews, Daniel Wilson of New Philadelphia and Brennen (Missie) Dunfee of Dover.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Robert Torgler.

In keeping with Steve’s wishes, cremation will take place through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, a private celebration of Steve’s life, for family only, will take place at The First Church of the Brethren with Pastor David Hobbs officiating.  A viewing for family and friends will take place on Friday, November 13, 2020 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia.

Due to Covid 19, safety precautions will be taken. The 6-foot rule will be honored and all guests are required to wear a mask in order to enter the funeral home. For the safety of everyone, and to allow other guests to pay their respects, we politely ask that visitors not linger in the funeral home and to promptly exit the building after greeting the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Steve’s memory to The First Church of the Brethren, 700 Fair Avenue NW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.

Ellen, Sara and Ryan, we are so shocked and sad to learn of Steve's sudden passing. Brad will always be thankful for his life long friendship with Steve starting in the early Boy Scout years and later in the equipment repair and sales business years. Zoe will always remember the numerous times Steve and Gary baled her out after she broke one mower or another and needed it picked up and repaired (hopefully before Brad found out!) Steve was always the best mechanical mind, with a great fix or solution nearly all the time. We will remember his kind voice, chuckle and sincere loyalty. A very good man with few peers. RIP Steve - your family is in our prayers. Until we meet again.
