Robert E. Thompson

December 4, 1936 — October 17, 2022

Robert E. Thompson, age 85, of Dover, died Monday, October 17, 2022, in Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital at Dover following a period of declining health.

Born in Dennison on December 4, 1936, Robert was a son of the late William and Carolyn Homan Thompson.

Bob was a graduate of the former Dennison High School where he was on the mile relay team in 1954 which broke the Eastern State District Record of the time. He also placed numerous times throughout his high school career in pole vaulting and half-mile run.

Upon his graduation, he entered into the United States Navy during the Korean War where he enjoyed playing football and boxing while also serving aboard the USS Yosemite. Shortly after his honorable discharge he began working for the Daily Reporter as a Pressman under Fred Kollar and was part of the merger with the Daily Times. The two newspapers formed what we once knew as the Times Reporter. Bob continued for more than 40 years where he ran the Metro Press and retired as the Press Foreman. Following his retirement from the Times Reporter Bob worked for the City of Dover at Memorial Hall in the Parks and Recreation Department.

Bob was a member of New Pointe Community Church at Dover, New Philadelphia Elks Lodge #510, Dover Moose, Dover Jaycees, Dover Tornado Club, and the Tuscarawas County Senior Center. He was an avid golfer and a supporter of all Dover sports. He enjoyed supporting his children and grandchildren’s activities and spending time with each of them.

He will be missed by his daughter, Robin (Jonathan) Miller of Dover; a son, R. Troy (Luann) Thompson of Milford; six grandchildren, Jessica (Keaven) Vogel, Nathan Miller, Logan (Sydney) Miller, Ciara (Nick) Harshey, Juli (Jordan) Traylinek and Valerie Thompson; seven great-grandchildren, Kade, Aria, Nolan, Nico, Nash, Nora and Mila as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife, of more than 60 years, Helen M. Thompson whom he married on November 7, 1959, and died on August 16, 2020; two brothers, William “Sonny” Thompson and Gary “Lefty” Thompson, and a sister, Pam Armstrong.
