Richard R. “Dick” Shaffer, 86, of New Philadelphia, passed through Heaven’s Gate on Monday, July 01, 2002, in his residence after a lengthy illness.He was born May 1, 1916 on a farm near New Cumberland, a son of the late Herman J. and Bessie M. Shaffer (Ripley) and a stepson of Adolpus Ripley. A lifelong resident of the area, he attended Milltown elementary, graduated from Sherrodsville High School in 1935, and attended 3 years at Ohio State University majoring in secondary education. Richard eventually pursued the trade of carpenter, much the same as his ancestors before him. He worked for 35 years as a finish carpenter, retiring in 1979 from Gundy Construction. He was a 50-year member of local # 69 of the Canton Carpenters Union and a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church of New Philadelphia. Richard enjoyed bowling, golfing, crossword puzzles, and camping with his wife, brothers and their families.He is survived by his wife, the former Kathlyn F. Bower, who he joined in marriage on September 12, 1941, and with whom he would have celebrated their 61st anniversary this year. In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Linda K. (Alan) Everhart; son, Richard C. (Wanda) Shaffer; brother, Herman J. (Thelma) Shaffer; step sister, Kathryn (Ripley) Campbell, all of New Philadelphia; one grandson, Timothy R. (Tracie) Shaffer of Buffalo Grove, IL; three granddaughters, Tamara S. (Mark) Kalt of New Philadelphia, Misti K. (Clark) Stalnaker of Ashland, and Traci R. Marshall of Dover; two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Kayla Stalnaker; five great-grandsons, Anthony Horton, Cory and Clay Marshall, Adam and Craig Shaffer complete the family.Richard was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark A. Everhart; a son-in-law, Donald B. Marshall; two brothers, Wendall and Clyde Shaffer; four sisters, Hazel Renneckar, Lenora Albaugh, Helen Sweany, and Georgia Shaffer; three step-brothers, Orvil, Raymond and Willard Ripley and a step-sister, Doris Ripley Septer.Calling hours will be on Tuesday, July 2, 2002, from 5-8 pm at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home, New Philadelphia. Funeral Services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at 10:30 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Jim Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia.
