August 16, 1949 — July 20, 2018

Melvin John Hren, 68, of New Philadelphia died late Friday evening, July 20, 2018, in Mercy Medical Center at Canton following a lengthy illness.

Born in Twin City Hospital at Dennison on August 16, 1949, Melvin was a son of the late Joseph and Mary Swaim Hren.

Following his graduation from Claymont High School, Melvin earned his Education Degree from Kent State University and taught elementary and Title 1 for Indian Valley Schools for 35 years. He loved helping others, especially children and was involved as a 4-H advisor to the Griffin Club for 19 years.

Melvin was a member of the First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia, the Masonic Lodge #177 and the Order of the Eastern Star. For many years he sold and repaired Rainbow Sweepers, enjoyed hunting, fishing and taught hunting safety courses. Through his various community efforts and involvements, he was honored with a Hometown Hero Award.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jodi (Stemple) Hren whom he married on July 19, 1971; their children, Amy, John (Naomi), and Vic (Michelle); seven grandchildren, Xenia, Mie, Allyster, Bennett, Graham, Kelly, and Kim; his mother-in-law, June Stemple; a sister-in-law, Valerie; and a niece and nephew, Heather and Matt.

He will also be deeply missed by many “adopted” children and grandchildren whom he befriended through the years and came to think of as his own.

In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Herbert Stemple.

The family will greet guests on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 from 1-3 and 6-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where a Masonic service will be held at 7:45 PM. A celebration of Melvin’s life will be led by Pastors Jeff Gerber and Jill Lovett on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 10:30 AM in the funeral home’s chapel.

For the past 15 years, Melvin has courageously battled Thynoma Cancer and through his treatments of this rare disease has helped others. Memorial contributions in Melvin’s name may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad Street, Canfield, OH 44406.
