Mary Jane Barrett, 89, peacefully passed away at her home in New Philadelphia on Saturday, November 9, 2019.
Born in Short Creek Township in Harrison County, Ohio on February 16, 1930, Mary was a daughter of the late William and Margaret Moore Howes.
Mary enjoyed being a devoted wife and a loving mother to her five children. Like many, she set and met many life goals. In her 30s, she went back to school and earned her diploma. In her 50s, she earned a green belt in Karate. She was also a published author having had many of her poems and writings put into print.
She devoted a great deal of her life to others having served as a Girl Scout leader and volunteering her time in her church’s soup kitchen. She enjoyed working outside her home in her flower gardens and made sure each member of her family received a lovingly crafted, hand-made, blanket.
She will be deeply missed by her son, Courtney (Connie) Barrett of Hendersonville, Tennessee, her daughters, Sharon S. Lemasters of New Philadelphia, Karen J. (Don) Drennen of Rivesville, West Virginia and Melissa J. (Keith) Halpenny of Hanover, Pennsylvania; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, William Barrett; her brothers, Arlee, Will, and Chuck; her sisters, Norma Liedtke and Sara Powell; her youngest son, Gary L. Barrett; and a grandson, Tyler Halpenny.
The family will greet guests one hour prior to services on Saturday, November 16, 2019, from 1-2 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Denny Rohn will lead a service celebrating Mary’s life in the funeral home’s chapel at 2PM. Burial will follow in Short Creek Cemetery in Cadiz.

Sorry Courtney on the loss of your Mother. Prayers for You and Connie and your family.
Memaw is what I remember her by when I was just a little girl. As I got older she was grams. I loved her so dearly and cherish every memory of her cooking in the kitchen and scrubbing her floors on her hands and knees.(she said that was the only way floors got clean). I remember her gardening and picking beans. A few of my fondest memories are of her and I riding to Parkersburg or to Maryland to visit the family; the talks we had. I will miss her smile and hearing her say my name “Nikki”! I love you, memaw and will carry your memories always close to my heart. ??
