Louis “Brent” Helwig

Louis “Brent” Helwig, 83, of Strasburg, who was bathed in the sacraments of the Holy Catholic Church, passed away Wednesday, November 17, 2021 in Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Center at Canton following a brief illness.

Born January 1, 1938, in Chillicothe, Ohio, he was the son of the late Louis John and Maude Ella (Murphy) Helwig, he was a veteran having served with the United States Army Reserve and was a graduate of Franklin University with a degree in Engineering. Brent was an Inventor, Entrepreneur and a small Business Owner.

Possessing a deep faith and a devout Catholic, Brent was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover, the Knights of Columbus and also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On April 23, 1960, Brent married the former Winifrede C. Michaels and together they shared over 61 years of marriage before his passing. In addition to his wife, Brent is survived by his seven children, Louis “Brent” (Cheryl) Helwig II and Dolores “Dee” (Bob) Burke both of Florida, Christopher (Martha) Helwig of Bolivar, Karen (Howard) Poorman of Dover, Patrick (Tammy) Helwig of Zoar, Mary (Jim) Seldenright of New Philadelphia and Theresa (Todd) Hamm of Virginia; 24 grandchildren and 83 Great Grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, a granddaughter Alicia Helwig, also preceded him in death.

A Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at 10:30 AM in St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover with Father Jimmy Hatfield officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery at Bolivar where the New Philadelphia VFW will provide military honors. Visitation will be held Monday, November 22, 2021 from 4 to 7 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover with a Christian Wake Service beginning at 6:45 PM.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
