Lester William Mathias

LESTER W. MATHIAS, 84, long-time New Philadelphia resident, died at Union Hospital on Monday evening, September 2, 2002. He was born October 1, 1917 in Canton to the late Elmer and Irene Kuhn Mathias. During World War II, Mr. Mathias served honorably with the U. S. Coast Guard, from 1942 until 1947. On February 6, 1945 he married Edna M. Wenger, who preceded him in death on April 8, 1995. Mr. Mathias was a railroad engineer for the former B & O Railway and the CSX Railway and retired after 40 years service in 1983. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers, the L. S. T. Association and N. A. R. V. E. in Dennison. After retiring, Mr. Mathias enjoyed vegetable gardening and spending time at home. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. & Cindy Mathias; sisters, Mrs. Rose Beitzel and Mrs. Alma Casebeer, both of New Philadelphia and Della (Paul) Flickenger of Dover; brother, Paul “Shorty” (Jean) Mathias of New Philadelphia; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his only grandchild, Daniel Mathias, and a brother, Miles Mathias. There will be no calling hours. The graveside service will be on Thursday, September 5, 2002 at 10:30 AM at Evergreen Burial Park with Rev. Stuart Barr officiating. Following the cemetery service everyone is invited to share in a meal at the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home. LESTER W.
