Jonathan Roney

Jonathan “Jon” L. Roney, 64, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday, January 24, 2019 at his home following a period of declining health.

A son of Joann (Meisner) Roney of New Philadelphia and the late Robert Roney, Jon was born October 6, 1954 at Dover, Ohio.

Jon graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1973. On January 29, 1980, he married the former Sandra Petersheim and together the couple raised three sons, Ryan, Aaron and Alex.

During his younger years, Jon was employed as a machinist at the former Shenango Company at Dover. He eventually retired from Joy Manufacturing/Howden-Buffalo at New Philadelphia in 2008. Jon was also a longtime member of the United Steel Workers’ Union.

He was a member of Church of New Hope at Dover. Jon was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time at our local lakes.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 39 years, Sandra Roney; his mother, Joann; his sons, Ryan (Leslie) Roney, Aaron Roney and Alex Roney all of New Philadelphia; a granddaughter, Adan and a grandson whose birth is expected in February; a sister, Sue (Jim) Goray of San Antonio, Texas and his faithful companion, his dog, Leroy.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 28, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Jon’s life will follow in the funeral home at 7 p.m. with Pastor Dan Legg officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia. In keeping with Jon’s wishes, cremation will follow the services.
