Janet Dummermuth, 85, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, June 10, 2020 in New Dawn Retirement Center at Dover following a recent illness.

A daughter of the late Mancel and Grace Gates, Janet was born December 3, 1934 at Shadyside, Ohio.

Janet graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1953. In her early adult life, she dedicated herself to taking care of her husband and children. Then, as her children grew older and started their own families, she had that same dedication for her grandchildren as well as for the children of the neighborhood by serving as a crossing guard for 20 years. Janet also attended First Christian Church at New Philadelphia.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 69 years, Dale Dummermuth; her children, Mark (Judy) Dummermuth, Vicki (Tim) Miller, Mike Dummermuth, Matt Dummermuth and Todd (Shila Nalawadi) Dummermuth; eight grandchildren, Derek, Justin, Chris, Tyler, Natasha, Victor, Lydia and Jillian; nine great-grandchildren, Stacia, Farryn, Drew, Koen, Kamdyn, Karsyn, Roy, Kennedy and Kash and a brother, Kent Gates.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Barbara and Sandy Gates and a brother, Danny Gates.

In keeping with Janet’s wishes, there will be no calling hours and cremation will take place through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A private family graveside will be held in Jerusalem Church Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Janet’s memory to the First Christian Church, 104 Third Street NW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.

Janet was my sister Dortha “Dot” Rainsberg Knotts maid of honor and best friend al through high school. Dot passed away last month. Bill and Dot and Dale and Janet ran around together in their younger years. I was going through Dots things and found an autograph book from when she was 12 and Janet signed it. I wanted to send it to you but it won’t copy here. I will try to put it in the pictures page. So sorry for your loss I miss my sister everyday even though there was 12 years between us.

I consider it to have been a privilege to have known Janet. She was a fine lady, and along with Dale, a good friend. My condolences go out to the entire Dummermuth family. Rest in peace Janet.

I have so many great memories of Aunt Janet and I will miss her so much. My brothers and I spent more time at her house, especially during the summer, than we did at our own. Dale and Janet probably thought at times that they had 8 kids instead of 5. Bill and I send our love and sympathy to Uncle Dale and Mark, Vicki, Mike, Matt, Todd and their families. Rest in Peace Janet, I love you.

Dale, Mark, Vicki & Family, so sorry to hear of Janet's passing. A caring, fun loving, devoted wife & mother. My mom & dad talked of the great times they had with Dale & Janet. Funny, warm hearted tales of a mom & dad raising a family. I am certain love was the motivation for all Janet did. May you find comfort knowing Janet's influence on everyone was only wonderful & fun.
