Eugene “Gene” Nemitz, Jr.

Eugene “Gene” H. Nemitz, Jr., 72, long time New Philadelphia attorney, passed away October 19, 2020. Born April 19, 1948, he was the son of the late Shirley L. (Duncan) and Eugene H. Nemitz, Sr.

He was a graduate of Jefferson Area High School, Wittenburg University, and The Ohio State University School of Law. In addition to being a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Tuscarawas County Bar Association, Gene was a member of The Ohio State University Alumni Club, the Tuscarawas County OSU Alumni Club, the Quaker Foundation, the Quaker Club, and a life long member of the Elks. He also served terms on the Tuscarawas County Board of United Way and the New Philadelphia School Board.

Gene was a sports enthusiast and for more than 30 years enjoyed attending both New Philadelphia High School and OSU football games with his close friend Larry Markworth. He was also an avid reader and collector of books.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Dian (Thomas) Nemitz of Dover; his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jason and Aman Nemitz of North Ft. Myers, Florida; siblings, Sandy (Gene) Young, Daniel Nemitz, the late Tim Nemitz, Becky Beckwith, Pam (David) Brenneman, Emily (Ralph) Benetka, Lori (Adrian) Williams; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call Friday, October 23, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Geib Funeral Center at 5600 N. Wooster Ave., Dover. A service celebrating Gene’s life will be conducted by his childhood friend Reverend Dave Anderson of Ashtabula and will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home.

Due to Covid 19, safety precautions will be taken. With that in mind, the 6-foot rule will be honored and all guests are to wear masks. For the safety of everyone and to allow other guests to pay their respects, we politely ask that visitors do not linger at the funeral home after greeting the Nemitz family.
