Donald L. Abbuhl, Sr

August 12, 1927 — July 14, 2002

DONALD L. ABBUHL, SR., 74, of New Philadelphia, went home to be with his Savior on Sunday, July 14, 2002. Don had recently been hospitalized at Aultman Hospital in Canton. He was born August 12, 1927, a son of the late Roy E. and Matilda Stubbins Abbuhl. Don served with the U. S. Army and Reserves from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1956. On December 5, 1953, Don married Carrie Rennicker, with whom he celebrated 48 years of marriage in December, 2001. Don retired from General Electric Wire Works at Dover in 1987 after 35 years service. During that time, from 1961 to 1993, he and Carrie owned and operated “Don’s Appliance Service & Repair”. Along with Carrie, Don was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in New Philadelphia for twenty years. Prior to that he was a member of the Church of God at Uhrichsville and New Philadelphia. Even though Don’s profession was repairing appliances, he enjoyed working on them in his spare time as well. He also enjoyed vacationing in the southern United States and watching the Cleveland Indians. Don also liked working puzzles with Carrie and listening to southern gospel music. In addition to Carrie, Don is survived by three sons, Don (Sherry) Abbuhl, Jr. of Dover, Rick Abbuhl of Dennison and John Abbuhl of Greensboro, NC; one sister, Barbara (Melvin) Wengerd of Beach City; seven brothers, Harold Abbuhl of Cuyahoga Falls, Ken (Marie) Abbuhl of Tuscarawas, Dale (Lottie) Abbuhl of New Philadelphia, Doyle (Deloris) Abbuhl of Gnadenhutten, Loren (Mae) Abbuhl of Canton, Richard (Twila) Abbuhl of New Philadelphia and David (Mary) Abbuhl of Massillon; five grandchildren, Jessica (Dirk) Stoltz of Bellaire, Mistee Freeman, Julie & Michelle Abbuhl and Donald Abbuhl, III, all of Dover; three great-grandchildren, Sydney and Jake Stoltz of Bellaire and Jaelee Freeman of Dover; many nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law, Mary Chaney of New Philadelphia. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Lyn Abbuhl, three sisters and one brother. Calling hours will be in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 16, 2002, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral will be in the First Church of the Nazarene, 233 Fair Ave., NE in New Philadelphia on Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Terry Kidd officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgecrest Memory Gardens with military rites presented by New Philadelphia VFW Post No. 1445. Following the committal a reception will be given in the church’s Family Life Center.
