Dennis W. Hicks, 77, of New Philadelphia, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, went to be with his Lord and Savior early Friday, July 6, 2018, while in the care of Community Hospice’s Truman House. For the past two years Dennis has bravely battled Glioblastoma Brain Cancer.

Born in Union Hospital at Dover on April 25, 1941, Dennis was the son of the late Frank and Stella “Ann” Kiriluk Hicks.

A 1959 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, Dennis furthered his education at Malone University before returning home to help his father in the operation of their family business, Hicks Roofing, Inc. Dennis soon took over operations of the family firm and built upon the company’s reputation through his personable style, hard work and honesty with his customers. In 1999 he retired from everyday life at the company, but took on a job as being a fulltime Grandpa.

While in High School, Dennis caught the eye of a young lady by the name of Peggy Smith, the couple became high school sweethearts and married on October 3, 1964. Together they raised four children, enjoyed traveling and making lifelong memories as a family. Dennis loved being outdoors, riding horses, hunting with his grandchildren, riding ATVs and being a proud member of the NRA.

Six months prior to his marriage to Peggy, Dennis entered into the US Army Reserves. In the early 1960’s through 1969, Dennis served as a member of the New Philadelphia City Council, where for a period of time served as the Council President. In the late 1990’s Dennis served on the New Philadelphia City Schools school board and did his best to aid the community through the turmoil that resulted following the devastating fire that gutted the high school.

As a man of great faith, Dennis never shied away from sharing his faith in God with others. He also lived out that same faith in his daily life. For many years, his faith was nurtured at First Christian Church at New Philadelphia where he served as an Elder, a Deacon and a long-time Sunday School teacher. He later attended Dover First Christian Church and enjoyed attending Park Christian Church at Dennison, to watch special performances of his grandchildren. For the past decade, Dennis and Peggy have attended NewPointe Community Church at Dover and enjoyed being actively involved with their small group.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, Dennis will be deeply missed by his family that includes their four children, Mike (Beth) Hicks of New Philadelphia, Michele (Mark) Hughes of Florida, Ryan (Naomi) Hicks of Uhrichsville, and Jim (Lara) Hicks of Johnstown, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Drew (Kristen) Hicks, Alan (Megan) Hicks, and Cori Hicks, Emma, Logan and Anna Hicks, and Ashton, Brayden, Karsyn, and Palyn Hicks; and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Addy Hicks.

Completing the family are his siblings, Dawn (Fred) Kinsey and Dwain “Butch” (Liz) Hicks all of New Philadelphia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many cousins.

In addition to his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by a stillborn brother, Franklin Hicks.

A Celebration of Life gathering will take place on Saturday, July 14, 2018 from 1-4 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover where an informal, family-led reflection on Dennis’ life will begin at 4 PM.

Two organizations close to the family’s heart are where they request contributions be directed in memory of Dennis: Imagine Missions, Inc. 236 Miller Avenue, Dennison, OH 44621 or Thirst Relief International, PO BOX 2266, Bend, OR 97709.

We are so sorry to the entire Hicks family for your loss. Denny was one of the very finest men we have ever met. A true class act. What a fabulous role model he was to all of us as a Christian father, son, husband, grandpa, etc. Unfortunately we will be on vacation Saturday and will miss the Celebration of Life gathering. Otherwise we certainly would have attended. May God comfort all of you. Dan, Kris, and Adam Schmidt as well as Karen Schmidt Mastroine

Dear Hicks Family, We are so sorry for your loss. When we think of Denny, one word comes to mind...leader. He was a leader in his home, family business, faithful servant to the church and his community. His love for Christ was evident in all the areas in which he served. We were blessed to know him and we know his legacy will live on in all of you, future generations of the Hicks Family, and the countless lives he touched. May God's comfort, strengthen and sustain you during this difficult time. With deepest sympathy, Jeff and Cathryn Neidig

Denny Hick's was a great man and he will forever have an impact on my life in unimaginable ways. One memory that I still cherish is splitting firewood with him and him telling me stories from when he served in the reserves. God bless you Denny and his family during this difficult time. I feel proud knowing that Denny and my mom are above watching over me.

To The Hicks children and grandchildren. Your dad and grandfather would be so proud of you with how you have handled all the events of the last 21/2 years. Such a beautiful Christian Family. Love you Bob and Wynne

Peggy and Family, Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Dennis has touched so many hearts along the way including our family. Not only was he an incredible man, he was an incredible brother-in-law. He was Lindsay’s Godfather and took his job seriously. He wrote her the most beautiful letter on her wedding day. Dennis and Peggy came to Koopers game to watch him pitch against New Phila. He took Lindsay fishing when she was a little girl that made such an impression on her. When we visited with Kora in her little softball uniform, Dennis looked at her and listened to her story as if no one else was in the room. Dennis was an intregel part of our small group. We laughed, loved, cried and worked together. He said the blessing at our 50th wedding Anniversary party which meant so much to us. His blessings always had so much meaning. His jokes always kept us laughing. We could keep on going because he was that kind of a man. A real role model. He will be missed but never, ever forgotten. God Bless. Love Bob, Wynne, Kurt, Traci, Kooper, Jake, Camryn, Kyle, Lindsay, Kora and Brecken

Never in my life have I seen such a family full of love, and celebrating your father's life before he went to be with Our Lord! Thanks to Facebook I have been able to follow your memories, meeting through my son when you were his kindergarten teacher Michele! The love your family has shared throughout this journey may seem very simple to you, but its not something every family has. You are very blessed to have the love and memories of the past month to live on. Sweet Blessings for Peace, knowing your Dad is now with his Savior and at Peace. Much Love, The Peeks Family (Michele, Kelly, Hunter, Christo and Justin Peeks)

As a family friend...I personally witnessed Dennis's love for his God and his family for many years. He loved them both immeasurably. If you were fortunate enough to be called, were Blessed. Dennis could tickle your funny bone...and make you question your own intelligence....he was soulful....he was insightful...and prayerful. I will miss hearing his prayers and his words of wisdom. Yes, Dennis....You made a difference.. Mama Peggy, Mike, Michele, Ryan, Jim and families...Praying for your comfort.

He was a wonderful man and spoke highly of you. I am envious of the love you two have shared. You and your family are in my prayers. I love you and hope to have you show up sometime on our Wed Night Kids program sometime. We will miss him terribly.
