Amerigo S. Mastreano

October 19, 1908 — February 22, 2002

Amerigo S. “Archie” Mastreano, 93, passed away Friday, February 22, 2002 at Aultman Hospital, following an illness of six weeks. He was born Oct. 19, 1908 in Pitcarn, Pennsylvania to the late Domenico and Josephine Valentino Mastroianni. He lived in Calabria, Italy during his early teenage years, returing to live in the Canton-Massillon area. In 1935, he moved to New Philadelphia where he owned and operated Goodyear Shoe Repair of North Broadway for twenty-six years. He spent the next twenty years working as a Right of Way agent for the State of Ohio and Stark County Engineers.Archie was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Senior Citizens, Public Employee Retirees, Tuscarawas County Chapter of AARP, Tusco Rifle Club, Canton Ex-Newsboys Association, was one of the original organizers of the Tuscarawas County Italian-American Festival Organization, active in the Tuscarawas County Democratic Party and was a Precinct Committeeman for many years.In the late 1930’s he trained and managed several area young men as amateur boxers. Two of them later went on to AAU upper levels and competed in championship matches at Boston Gardens in Massachusetts in 1940.Archie loved opera, classical music and ballroom dancing. He also loved hunting and fishing and made a wonderful large garden every year.He was preceded in death in 1995 by his wife of sixty years, the former Virginia Antonini of Alliance, whom he wed Nov. 28, 1935.He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Treva and Richard Aeling of Canton with whom he made his home in recent years. In addition he is survived by grandson, Douglas Aeling of Stratford, Connecticut, granddaughter Julia Aeling of Chicago, Illinois, brother and sister-in-law, William and Carmel Mastreano of Massillon, niece Dorine Firestone of California, nephew Bill Mastreano of California, and six nieces and one nephew by marriage.Calling hours will be Monday from 4-7 PM at Geib Funeral Home. Christian Wake services will be held at 6:30 PM. Funeral Mass will be in Canton on Tuesday at Our Lady of Peace Church, 833 39th St. N.W. at 11:00 AM, with calling house one hour prior to the service. Graveside comittal services will be held at 2:00 PM at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Alliance, Ohio.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church in Archie’s memory.
