ALVERNA M. THOMAS, 81, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, November 24, 2002 at Aultman Hospital in Canton following a brief illness. She was born in New Philadelphia to the late Herman A. and Nina Wise Wade. During World War II, Alverna served honorably with the W. A. C. Along with her husband, Floyd E. “Whimpy” Thomas, she was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and its Esther’s Circle. Her husband, whom she married March 11, 1943, died November 2, 1993. A long-time resident of New Philadelphia’s south side, Alverna was a Cub Scout den mother. She also taught swimming at the Tuscora Park pool and at the Y. M. C. A., where she’s been a member since 1952. Alverna a member of the New Philadelphia Red Cross since 1953, the Tuscarawas County Senior Citizens Center, and was formerly a member of the I. O. O. F. She is survived by two sons, Robert (Joyce) Thomas of Dover and Floyd “Tom” (Rebecca) Thomas of Granville; daughter, Sharron Rae Hurless of Keewatin, MN; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert E. Wade of Canton. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph Patrick Thomas, a grandson, Patrick Eugene Hurless and her twin sister, Pauline “Polly” Gaier. The memorial service will be Wednesday, November 27, 2002, 10:00 AM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 202 E. High Ave. at Second St. in New Philadelphia with Pastor Michael E. Walters officiating. Immediately following the service there will be a reception in the church. There will be no calling hours and private burial will take place at Union Cemetery in Port Washington.Contributions may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 202 E.
