William Eugene “Bill” Abel, 73, passed away unexpectedly on September 13, 2026, at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital.

Born in the Twin Cities on February 24, 1953, Bill was the son of the late Lloyd W. and Gladys L. (Gray) Abel.

Following his formal education, Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army. One of the experiences he especially enjoyed sharing was his service as a member of the Honor Guard for President Richard M. Nixon while stationed in Hawaii.

Bill later devoted many years of service to the City of Dover, working as a mechanic in the General Services Division until his retirement in 2019.

Above all else, Bill was a true pillar of his beloved family. Through the decades, he loved them deeply, worked hard for them, stood beside them, and gave them countless memories filled with laughter and love. While Bill’s passing was sudden, the impact he made on those who loved him was built gradually over a lifetime—deep, lasting, and permanent.

Bill was not a man you could easily miss. A big, strong guy with a personality to match, he had a way of filling whatever room he entered. In a world where people sometimes hide who they truly are, Bill was fiercely and unapologetically himself. What you saw was what you got. He spoke his mind, didn’t play games, and lived with a rare and refreshing honesty.

With Bill, you never had to wonder where you stood. If he didn’t care for someone, he wasn’t likely to hide it. But the other side of that honesty was something truly special: if Bill liked you, loved you, or considered you a friend, you knew that just as clearly. His friendship, affection, and approval were unmistakable, and because they came from a man who was so genuine, they meant all the more to those fortunate enough to receive them.

Bill loved to laugh, and he especially loved to tease. Those who knew him will forever remember his trademark sense of humor. He might look your way and offer a gruff, “Hey, punk,” only to follow it with that big, unforgettable smile and a laugh. It was Bill’s way of connecting, teasing, and showing affection—and it had a way of breaking the ice and bringing a smile to everyone around him.

The love Bill gave throughout his life did not disappear when he took his final breath. It remains very much alive in his family.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Debra, whom he married on January 15, 1974; his children, William E. (Stephanie) Abel of Dover, Marissa (Bryan) Miller of Dover, and Jason (Jessica) Abel of Sherrodsville; his grandchildren, Summer (Grant) Handrich, Gage William Abel, Hunter (Jared) Torch, Samuel Miller, and William Holden Abel; his great-grandchildren, Esmee, Koa, Rocco, Ariel, and Willow; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Kelli (Jeff) Mathews, Rick (Beth) Varnes and Todd Varnes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his brother, Ronnie (Sue) Abel of Uhrichsville.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Leavers, and his brother, Roy Abel.

Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover on Thursday, September 17, 2026 from Noon to 2 p.m. A funeral service honoring Bill’s life will begin at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Jeff Matthews officiating. A private burial will be held in Dover Burial Park.

We love you, Bill. We will miss your presence at our tables, your jokes, your booming voice, and that unforgettable smile. But we carry you in our hearts until we meet you again, with faith in Christ, in our eternal home in glory.
