Terry Lee Carpenter, 84, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, entering into the arms of Jesus while holding the hand of his beloved wife and best friend, Marylin, following a period of declining health.
Born on January 7, 1942, in New Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Clifford Carl and Zelpha Mae (Reichman) Carpenter.
On April 29, 1962, Terry married his high school sweetheart, the former Marylin J. Herman, at the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia. Together, they built a life centered on faith, love, family, and shared purpose, remaining devoted partners through every season of life.
Terry was a loving, God-fearing man whose life was defined by humility, kindness, and truthfulness. His faith was the foundation of his life, guiding his actions, his relationships, and his service to others. He was a longtime active member of First United Methodist Church, where he faithfully served in a variety of roles, including many years as a Trustee. In recent years, his faith was nurtured at Broadway Global Methodist Church, where he and Marylin were devoted members.
Terry dedicated his professional life to the heating and cooling industry, beginning his career in 1961. In 1985, he and Marylin founded Carpenter Heating & Cooling, Inc., building a business rooted in integrity, hard work, and care for their community. The company has since been entrusted to the management of their sons, who continue Terry and Marylin’s legacy of excellence. In recognition of his outstanding work, Terry was awarded a National Medal of Excellence in HVAC sales and service in 1994.
Deeply committed to his community, Terry was a past member of the New Philadelphia Rotary and was especially passionate about his involvement in the Boy Scouts of America. He proudly supported his two sons in achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and celebrated the same accomplishment in his grandson. Terry served as a past District Chairman for the Netawotwes District and was honored with the C. Bernard Myers Service Award for his dedication and leadership.
He was also a devoted band parent for the Marching Quaker Band and contributed his time and energy to numerous organizations throughout the community.
Above all, Terry treasured his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. He found great joy in the simple pleasures of life—spending hours working in the yard and tending the garden alongside Marylin, watching the birds, and indulging his well-known love for sweets, especially cake.
Terry will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his servant’s heart, and the love he shared so freely with his family and community.
He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by his family including Marylin; his sons, Douglas (Teri Lynn) Carpenter of New Philadelphia and Christopher (Beth) Carpenter of Bolivar; grandchildren, Kaitlin and Jacob Carpenter, Noah (Maleigha) Carpenter and their daughter, Olive, and Hallie Carpenter; his brother, John (Carolyn) Carpenter of Dover; and four nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held in the Geib Center at Dover on Sunday, April 19, 2026 from 2 to 4 p.m. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home on Monday, April 20, 2026 beginning at 11 a.m. with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. Private inurnment will be held in Dover Burial Park.
Memorial contributions in Terry’s memory may be directed to either Broadway Global Methodist Church, 120 Church Ave SE, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 or New Philadelphia Scout Association, 946 Cookson Ave. SE, New Phila.
