Philip Dean Weidman, 86, of Dover, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. He is now joyfully reunited with his beloved wife, Sherri, and his daughter, Ann, in the presence of their Lord.
Phil was born on December 27, 1939, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to the late Dean E. and Lila Vivian (Petersen) Weidman. He graduated from Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio.
A proud patriot, Phil honorably served his country in the United States Air Force with the Strategic Air Command, where he received decorations in recognition of his service. Following his military service, he continued his education at Kent State University, The American College, and the University of Maryland School of Law.
Phil enjoyed a long and successful career with Prudential Insurance Company, retiring in 2000. Never one to remain idle, he went on to establish his own insurance business, which he operated for the next 13 years. He also shared his knowledge and professional experience as an instructor at Kent State University at Tuscarawas for three years.
Phil was a man of many talents, interests, and adventures. Whether building racecars, riding motorcycles, driving trucks, or horseback riding, he embraced life with enthusiasm and a willingness to try just about anything. He was also a proud Eagle Scout, carrying the values of service, leadership, and integrity throughout his life.
Above all, Phil was a man of unwavering faith whose greatest joys were his family, his friends, and serving the Lord. A devoted member of Dover Alliance Church, he faithfully served as head trustee for more than 30 years. He could also often be found behind the sound booth, quietly using his talents to support the church and its ministry. His dedication, servant's heart, and willingness to lend a helping hand were a reflection of the faith he lived each day.
While Phil had many accomplishments and interests throughout his life, nothing brought him greater happiness than time spent with his children and grandchildren. He treasured every opportunity to be together, creating memories and sharing his love. His deep devotion to his family and his steadfast faith in God will remain an enduring part of his legacy.
Phil is survived by his daughter, Amanda (Brett) Weidman Wilcox; his son, Michael (girlfriend, Michele Burgess) Weidman; his grandchildren, Katherine Kassos, Elizabeth Kassos, Nicholas Kassos, and Emmie, Caleb and Drew Wilcox; his son-in-law, Matthew Kassos; his siblings, Gary (Mary) Weidman, William (Christie) Weidman and James (David) Weidman; his sister-in-law, Linda (Steve) Gray; numerous nieces and nephews. Phil was preceded in passing by his parents; wife, Sherri; and daughter, Ann Kassos. A funeral service will be held Thursday, November 12, at 11 a.m., in the Dover Alliance Church, with Pastors Bruce Sexton and Richard G. Rose officiating. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the church's social hall. Family and friends are invited to call at the Geib Funeral Center, 5600 N. Wooster Ave., Dover, on Wednesday, November 11, 2026 from 4 to 7 p.m. and an hour prior to the funeral at the church on Thursday. Memorial contributions in Phil’s memory be made to the Dover Alliance Church, 228 East Third St., Dover, OH 44622.
