Paul B. Wherley, age 93, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009, in Schoenbrunn Health Care Center at New Philadelphia.A son of the late Luther and Ella (Schieber) Wherley, Paul was born at Stone Creek on June 22, 1915.He graduated in 1934 from Stone Creek High School and from Kent State University in 1939. Paul entered into the United States Army in 1942 and served with the 188th Field Artillery in all five sectors of the European Theater. Paul served active duty for three years and spent seven years in the Reserves. He was discharged as a First Lieutenant.In 1943, Paul received his commission for flight training at Denton, Texas. Paul once flew his 65 horsepower Continental Piper Cub across the English Channel in two hours and ten minutes on July 27, 1944.For his service, Paul was awarded the Silver Medal with a Silver Star for all five sectors of the European Theater and eight Air Medals.On June 6, 1951, he married the former Helen Merkel and together the couple had two step-daughters.He retired from Diebold at Canton in 1977 following 36 years of service.Paul is survived by two step-daughters, Marjorie Valentine of Canton, Ohio, and Sondra Guthrie of River Bank, California; five step-grandchildren, and seven step-great grandchildren.Two nieces, Mrs. Rosetta Van Campen of Stone Creek, Mrs. Ellen Whitfield of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; and a nephew, David Wherley of Cincinnati, Ohio complete the familyIn addition to his parents and wife, Paul was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Wherley.Friends are invited to join the family for a graveside service at Stone Creek Cemetery on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at 2:30 P.M.Memorial contributions in Paul’s name may be sent to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover, Ohio 44622.
