Michael “Mike” Hughes was born on November 22, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Marie Morris and Kenneth Hughes. On December 12, 2025, he passed away, leaving behind a legacy of quiet strength, devotion, and simple joys that deeply touched those who knew and loved him.
Mike was a true homebody, happiest living life in a low-key, unassuming way. He had a lifelong appreciation for all things cars and could find genuine joy in their beauty, power, and craftsmanship. A devoted Nebraska football fanatic, he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his team and never passed up the chance to enjoy a good buffet—one of life’s pleasures he wholeheartedly embraced.
Mike proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. Stationed in Thailand, he served in combat and demonstrated unwavering dedication through three total tours, reenlisting twice. His service reflected his deep sense of duty, courage, and commitment—qualities that defined him throughout his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Andrew) Scafidi; Mark (Nora) Larson; daughter-in-law Janine Hughes; his brother Jim; his sister Kathy; and his adoring grandchildren, Alex, Ericka, Izzy, AJ, and Michael, who brought him immeasurable pride and joy.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved son, Mike, who passed less than three months before him. We take comfort in imagining their reunion—a magnificent one—filled with love, peace, and the embrace of family once again together.
In accordance with Mike’s wishes, there will be no formal services. He will be honored alongside his son at a celebration of life to be held in Las Vegas this January, where family and friends will gather to remember them both with love, stories, and gratitude.
Michael “Mike” Hughes will be remembered for his quiet presence, his steadfast love for family, his honorable service to his country, and the simple passions that made him who he was. He will be deeply missed and forever held in our hearts.
