Michael Dale Hughes, lovingly known as “Big Mike,” passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Truman House Hospice in New Philadelphia, Ohio, on September 20, 2025, from septic shock due to complications of multiple strokes. He was 54 years old.
Born on February 28, 1971, in Wahoo, Nebraska to Linda and Michael Hughes. Mike was a larger-than-life presence in every way. Standing 6’3” with broad shoulders, he carried his nickname “Big Mike” proudly – not just for his size, but his kind heart, booming laugh, and ability to light up any room.
Mike loved road trips, Legos, Star Wars and above all, Runzas. On one family trip, he talked his family into a five-hour detour just so he could savor one.
On November 27, 2004, Mike married the love of his life, Janine. Together they built a beautiful life. First, in Las Vegas, Nevada where their greatest joy arrived in 2008 with their son Michael. Followed by Texas, Kentucky and finally Dover, Ohio. Wherever they went, Mike made it home with his humor, warmth and fierce love for his family
Mike often joked that he would live to 100 – “not one day more.” Sadly, he left too soon.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 21 years, Janine; his beloved son Michael; his parents, Linda (Todd) Hargrove and Michael Hughes; his brother Mark (Nora) Larson; and his sister, Michelle (Andrew) Scafidi He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews, countless aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later date in Las Vegas, where family and friends are invited to gather and share memories – and of course, enjoy some Runzas in his honor. The Geib Funeral Center at Dover is handling arrangements.
