Obituary

Marvin Dale Haney, Jr. age 71, of New Philadelphia, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all, passed away peacefully at Aultman Compassionate Care Center in Canton following an eight-year battle with cancer.

Born at Union Hospital in Dover on November 18, 1954, Dale was a son of Bonnie Lou and Glen L. Lawver and Marvin Dale Sr. and Barbara Haney.

In 1970, while attending New Philadelphia High School, Dale met a young lady by the name of Barbara Winters. The couple began a relationship of love and adventure that has spanned the past 56 years. Dale graduated in 1973, and on December 6, 1975, he and Barb were married.

At a young age, Dale attended school to become a hydraulics specialist and went on to work in the industry for more than three decades. For over 20 years, Dale was employed by the former Hydraulic Parts Store in New Philadelphia, and during the final 13 years of his career, until his retirement in 2018, Dale worked for Dover Hydraulics.

When not working, Dale could often be found embracing life’s adventures. His carefree, gregarious, and charismatic personality led him to meet countless people throughout his life’s journey, many of whom became lifelong friends. Dale loved being around others and, in his lifetime, never met a stranger.

He was a gifted carpenter, mechanic, and “fixer of all things”. There wasn’t a problem Dale couldn’t solve, and when it came to helping others, he was the first to show up and would give the shirt off his back to anyone, especially his own family, his beloved wife, and daughters.

Dale loved the open road, riding his motorcycle, spending time in his garden, working on cars, collecting antiques, and other odds and ends which caught his eye, cooking, playing poker with friends, and first and foremost being a proud grandpa to five boys.

His legacy and memory are left behind in his wife, Barb; their daughters, Gwen (Lewis Hernandez) of Pleasant Hill, California, and Hope (Jacob Sheahan) of New Philadelphia; his grandsons, Benji and Maverick Hernandez, and Finn, Theo, and Ike Sheahan; his extended family of brothers and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will greet guests on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia. In honoring his wishes, a private funeral service will take place at a later date.
