LaJoya M. "Joy" (Kohler) Beitzel, 89, of New Philadelphia, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2026 at Park Village South in New Philadelphia. Born on October 18, 1936, in Stone Creek, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd F. and Eunice A. (Kunkle) Kohler.
After graduating from New Philadelphia High School in 1955, Joy worked as a bookkeeper at Tope’s Office Supply in her home town. She married Paul E. Beitzel on December 1, 1957, and they began life together in the Crooked Run Valley.
Joy was a devoted member of the Emmanuel Church for over six decades. Her faith was central to her life; she served as the church's Sunday School secretary for an impressive 45 years and read through the Bible every year. She showed an unwavering commitment to her faith and her church community.
Joy’s hobbies reflected her creative spirit and nurturing nature. She found joy in reading, crocheting, gardening, and sewing. She used her talent of crocheting to create many beautiful gifts that brought happiness to those around her. Each summer, her garden produced a bountiful supply of fresh vegetables which her family enjoyed.
Joy’s family was the cornerstone of her world. She is survived by her children: James (Twila) Beitzel, Ruth (David) Lucas, and Mark (Priscilla) Beitzel; nine grandchildren; one step-grandson; and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Bert Kohler and sister-in-law Phyllis Kohler. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Paul E. Beitzel of 68 years on January 29, 2026; a brother Larry C. Kohler and an infant brother Lloyd F. Kohler Jr.
Those who knew Joy remember her as kind, gentle, and loving. She had a unique ability to touch lives with her warmth and compassion. The best word to describe Joy is "giver," as she shared so freely with others. May Joy’s memory serve as an enduring source of comfort and inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Friends may call from 3:00 to 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 29, 2026 at Geib Funeral Center in Dover, 5600 N.
