Karen L. Cook, age 85, of New Philadelphia, died early Saturday, September 5, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio, following a brief period of declining health.

Born on January 14, 1941, Karen was born in the family home at New Philadelphia, one of three daughters born to the late Forest Steinbaugh and Eva Steinbaugh-Strawn.

Karen was a 1959 graduate of New Philadelphia High School. After high school, Karen worked at WJER Radio for a handful of years and later she worked for Starlight – Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

On November 18, 1971, Karen married Kenneth Harley Cook. Together, they raised their family and enjoyed countless road trips in the various Corvettes Ken owned throughout their 53 years of marriage. Karen was Ken’s helpmate in every sense of the word, including making sure his annual Valentine’s Day singing telegram schedule was worked out just so, and always complete with matching outfits for the pair. Ken preceded Karen in death nine months ago, just four days shy of their 54th wedding anniversary, on November 14, 2025.

Karen was known for her feisty yet lovable personality, unmatchable wit, and wonderful sense of humor. She deeply loved her family, especially her children, and supported them in all of their various ventures throughout life. She never missed a band competition, play, or special event. Karen was proud of their accomplishments and never shied away from sharing that pride with everyone around her.

Karen was generous in both heart and deed. Whatever her children or family needed or wanted, she was sure to provide. But her generosity extended well beyond her family, whether it was in the form of a cake made for a neighbor or friend or through the many years she and Ken spent delivering Mobile Meals. Her love was often found in the little things: the thoughtful gestures, acts of kindness, and simple ways she showed those around her that they were loved.

Karen will be missed by her children, Laura Bishop of Columbus, and Kenny Cook of Sherrodsville; her beloved grandchildren, Brock (Lacee) Bishop, Grant (Stephanie) Bishop all of Delaware, Ohio, Ella (Lucas) Thompson of Sugar Grove, Ohio, and Lillia (Aaron) Crecelius of Columbus; her great-grandchildren, Margot Crecelius, Bobby Bishop, and Eva Lynn Thompson; her sister Kay Rees of New Philadelphia and her nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Karen was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth L. Cook, II, and her sister, Romaine Coniglio.

In honoring Karen’s wishes, the family will hold a private celebration of his life. Burial will take place in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. The Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia is handling cremation care.
