Joseph “Joe” Paul Leggett, age 76, a lifelong resident of New Philadelphia, died at Union Hospital in Dover early Thursday morning, January 15, 2009 surrounded by his family.Born in New Philadelphia on March 26, 1932, he was the son of the late John and Ada (Archinal) Leggett.After completing his formal education at New Philadelphia High School, he joined the United States Army where he honorably served our country. Upon his return home, Joe began his professional career as a welder at the former Joy Manufacturing where he was a loyal employee for 41 years before his retirement.Joe was a man dedicated to his family and their activities. In 1951, he married his loving wife, the former Doris “Dori” Ford, who survives. He was gentle, committed and a loving man who took great pride in being present in his family’s lives. Whether it was playing with his grandchildren or providing loving advice, Joe was always there for his family. Additionally, he greatly enjoyed boxing and basketball and was an avid fan of the Ohio sports teams. Joe and Dori spent numerous hours watching sporting events and especially game shows on television. He also had a green thumb, tending to his vegetables in his garden. In addition to his family, Joe was quite fond of and enjoyed spending time with his dear neighbor and friend, Cory McCahill.Joe and Dori reared a wonderful family which includes their two children, Jerri (husband, Steve) Stemple of New Philadelphia and Joe Leggett of Hawaii; grandchildren, Stephanie (husband, Curt) Dunn of Zoar, Andy (wife, Sandi) Albright of New Philadelphia, and Mistie Pontin of Hawaii; 4 great-grandsons and 1 great-granddaughter; and a special friend and neighbor, Cory McCahill of New Philadelphia.In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his grandson, Derrick Leggett, 2 brothers and 1 sister.There will be no public visitation or funeral services. A private memorial service and inurnment of Joe’s cremated remains will take place at a later date.In gratitude for the care and love provided to Joe, his family requests memorial contributions be directed to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 W. 3rd St., Dover, OH 44622.
