John Jay Knisely, age 76, of Newport Kentucky, died Tuesday, November 21, 2023, in
Cincinnati, Ohio following a period of declining health.
Born in Dover, Ohio on January 22, 1947, John was the son of the late Paul and Grace
(Pennington) Knisely.
John graduated from Dover High School in the class on 1965. He was a member of the Dover
High Band as well as a member of the Lutheran Church of New Philadelphia. He enrolled at
Ohio University in the fall of 1965, where he was a member of the Flying Bobcats Aviation
Club, graduating in 1969. He enlisted in the Air Force in September of 1969, joining the flight
school. He served as a pilot and in various other capacities, eventually achieving the rank of
Captain until discharge for a visual impairment in 1975.
John was employed at the Ryder Truck Company, and later opened ‘Outdoor Adventures’ a
sporting equipment store in Cincinnati. He later took a position in the woodworking supply
industry. Throughout his career he loved tinkering with automobiles. He was a Cincinnati Ski
Club member, and enjoyed camping in the Cincinnati area campgrounds.
John is survived by numerous friends and cousins.
In keeping with John’s wishes, a private interment is planned at a later date.
