James Wortman

James Wortman, age 88, of New Philadelphia, passed away on Monday, November 3, 2025, in the care of Ohio’s Hospice Truman House. Born in New Philadelphia on November 26, 1936, James was the son of the late Carson Gerald and Pauline (Goudy) Wortman. On January 11, 1959, James married Beverly Ann Stein and they have enjoyed 66 years of marriage together and had two sons.

James was a car enthusiast over the years, owning 56 cars, from antiques to Corvettes to Trans Ams. He was a fixture at local car shows. He was the former owner/operator of Jim’s Shell in New Philadelphia and then was employed as a UPS driver for over 20 years.

He enjoyed scuba diving, trips to the Caribbean and yearly trips to the Cleveland Indians spring training in Florida. As a young man James was a member of the Marine Reserves and played local baseball. He was a member of the 1958 New Philadelphia Merchants State Championship team.

In addition to his wife of 66 years, James is survived by his two sons, Jerry (Jane) Wortman, and James P. Wortman all of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Sara Wortman, Laura Wortman, and Alex Wortman; and siblings, Judy Horn, Sherrill Edwards, and Tom (Joan) Lappin.

In honoring James wishes there will be no public visitation or service. There will be a celebration of life at a later date. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Ohio’s Hospice Truman House for their care of James during his illness.
