Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Michael Ulis, who left this world on May 7th, 2026, at the age of 76, undoubtedly muttering one final note about ensuring the well-being of his family without him at the helm.

Son of Judy (Ulis) Larson and stepdad Lou Larson, Jim graduated from Sandy Valley High School and put himself through Kent State University. Jim lived a life marked by safety, security, stubbornness, humor, and an uncanny ability to know every highway in the United States. He was a devoted husband, proud father, loving Papa(w), loyal friend and neighbor, master of directions, and self-appointed expert on absolutely everything.

He spent his career of 30 years as the New Philadelphia Health Inspector and approached every odd job with determination, common sense, and at least one skunk trap in the back of his mosquito spraying red truck. Jim was happiest when surrounded by family, while traveling across country to all fifty states and cruising out at sea. He taught his children important life lessons, including keen backseat driving skills, the fine art of worrying, dedication to your career and the importance of family. He leaves behind a home full of memories, precise mowing lines, framed pictures of his travels, and a fine collection of fleece jackets and New Balance tennis shoes.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51.5 years, Susan Ulis and his pride and joy, Justin (Ashley) Ulis and Shannon (Josh) Helms. His heart grew three sizes after the births of his grandchildren, Ethan and Samantha Ulis and Henry Helms.

In honor of Jim, the family encourages you to take the scenic route, try the hot dogs at Towpath Tavern, and always lock your doors at night, and then check them two more times.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered — proof that a life well lived has no roadmap, just endless stops for love and memories.

A cremation has already taken place along with a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Ohio Hospice Truman House.
