James Rose

September 29, 1931 — March 20, 2018

James M. “Jim” Rose, 86, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, March 20, 2018 in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a recent illness.

A son of the late William James and Corabelle (Gray) Rose, Jim was born September 29, 1931 at Uhrichsville, Ohio.

Jim graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1949. Then on January 24, 1951, he enlisted with the United States Army, completing his Infantry training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and eventually served in the Korean War. Jim completed Medical Laboratory School in Osaka, Japan and served two years as a laboratory technician in Evacuations and MASH Hospitals in Korea. Jim ultimately received an honorable discharge on January 23, 1954 at Fort Carson, Colorado. He was extremely patriotic and very proud of his military service and was rarely seen without a flag pin on his lapel. Jim was a former member of the American Legion at New Philadelphia and a life member of the New Philadelphia VFW.

In 1955, Jim met the love of his life, the former Shirley Crites, whom he later married on July 15, 1956.

In his younger years, Jim worked 16 years at Warner & Swasey in various positions before advancing to Production Buyer. He then retired from Ken Tool at Akron after nearly 30 years serving as the Director of Purchasing.

Jim enjoyed traveling with Shirley and the couple visited all 50 states at least once, as well as Canada and Mexico. He was an avid sports fan and was especially fond of the Cleveland Indians and Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes. He also claimed to be the world’s worst golfer, but loved being on the course with the guys.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Jennifer Rose of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Melissa (Darin) Leggett and Amber Rose both of New Philadelphia, Lucas Rose of Lynn Haven, Florida and Erin and Megan Muzechuk of New Philadelphia; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Rose-Jones of Newcomerstown.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Rose.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 10 to 11 AM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Jim’s life will follow at 11 AM in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be held in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
