James L. Huff, known to many as “Jim” or to friends as “Huffy,” passed away on June 16, 2025, at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio. He was 75 years old.
Born on January 25, 1950, in Dover, Jim was the beloved son of the late Garnet and Eleanor (Applegarth) Huff. A lifelong resident of the area, and a proud alumnus of New Philadelphia High School (Class of 1968), he made his mark as a hardworking entrepreneur and respected bar and restaurant owner.
Over the course of five decades, Jim poured his heart into a number of successful ventures beginning with his first, taking the reins at the New Philadelphia Eagles Lodge #2251 and continuing his passion for community and hospitality through this year at his cherished Huffys Bar & Grill. His establishments weren’t just businesses, they were gathering places where memories were made, stories were shared, and friendships were formed.
Jim was the proud father of Jaime Huff Sentz (Harrison) and Ryan (Mari) Huff. He was also a devoted grandfather to Mackenzie (Peyten) Patterson, Nora Huff, Grayson Huff, and Shelby Huff. He is survived by his siblings Diane Caldwell, Debbie Fox, and Terry Huff, and was preceded in death by his brothers Richard, Thomas, and Tim Huff.
Throughout his life, Jim had many friends, including his trusted right-hand man John “Maddog” Menapace, whose loyalty and support were like family. Huffy enjoyed life on his terms, spending time with his family, visiting Florida whenever he could, showing up for every drawing he could squeeze in, and enjoying a cold beer among friends. He was known for his generous spirit and for quietly helping others when they needed it most, often going out of his way to lend a hand without ever letting anyone know he’d done so.
Jim lived a life defined by loyalty, grit, and dedication. With a life fully lived and a path uniquely his own, Jim’s story now rests—remembered well and told often. From the barstools he filled with conversation to the quiet moments he spent helping others without a word, his mark on this world is unmistakable. His chapter may have closed, but the legacy he leaves behind will carry forward in memories, traditions, and the places still echoing with his presence.
Details about a celebration of life will be shared at a later date.
