James ”jim” A. Stoll

James A. “Jim” Stoll, age 70, a widely-known community and civic business leader, was born to Life Eternal on Friday, February 11, 2011, from his home with his loving family at his side, following a courageous battle with throat cancer. Born at Canton, Jim was the son of the late Otis Chester and Betty Mae (Mericle) Stoll. He spent his childhood as a resident of Hartville, where he graduated from Lake High School in 1958. He then continued his education at Mount Union College, before joining his family at Stoll’s IGA of Canton. Jim expanded his business when he began Stoll’s Country Cupboards of Louisville, North Canton, New Philadelphia, and Uhrichsville. Most recently he owned and operated Bag-N-Save Foods Inc., doing business as Giant Eagle before his retirement in 2007. On August 30, 1959, Jim married his lifelong companion and friend, the former Cindi Ross, in Asbury United Methodist Church at Battlesburg, O. They enjoyed a life full of family, friends, and love. Together, Jim and Cindi were former members of Broadway United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia and current members at First Christian Church. Jim generously gave of his time in bettering the community in which he lived by being an active servant of civic organizations. Locally, he was proud to be associated with the Ohio Outdoor Historical Drama Association as a longtime trustee, president and a member of their advisory board. Jim also served on the board of the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2000. Jim also gave of his time and talents being a board member with The United Way and the county’s Community Improvement Corp, among other organizations. On the day of his passing, Jim was awarded the Vic Marsh Annual Service Award from the United Way of Tuscarawas County for his commitment and dedication to the United Way and his community.Within his profession, Jim served on many boards of directors including the National Association of Retail Grocers of the United States (NARGUS) as its Chairman, the East Central Ohio Food Dealers (ECO), and the National Grocers Association (NGA). Jim always put his family first as evidence by the love and affection he received by his loving wife, Cindi, and his five daughters Vickie (Chris) Moeglin and Teresa (Terry) Spencer, both of Bolivar, Lisa (Larry) Wood, Sharon (Mark) Buccitelli, and Beth (Chip) Downin, all of Dover; his 13 grandchildren including Jack, Jessica, and Nathan Moeglin, Joshua (fiance Melinda) Spencer, Courtney (Anthony, Jr.) Pace, Eric Wood, Nathan (Jaclyn) Wood, Alex Wood, Zakree (Mandy) Buccitelli, Lauren Palek, Erin Downin, Elijah Palek, and Claire Downin; and 6 great-grandchildren. Jim’s siblings Carol Stark of Dunnellon, Florida, Susan (Kurt) Seebacher of Hartville, O. and David (Jeanne) Stoll of North Carolina, complete his family. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Elmer and Doris Ross. Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center, 5600 N. Wooster Ave., Dover on Tuesday, February 15, from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to services Wednesday morning at 11 in the First Christian Church in New Philadelphia with Pastors Jim Borton and Bill Sowers co-officiating. Following the service, friends are invited to the church’s fellowship hall where a meal will be shared.
