James Hubert
Granger
September 10, 1943 – May 13, 2026
On May 13, 2026, James Hubert Granger breathed his last on Earth and was welcomed into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father.
He was born on September 10, 1943, in his grandparents’ home in Piggott, Arkansas, to the late John William and Vera Mozelle (Brawner) Granger.
Before his senior year of high school, he and his family attended a revival at the Christian Church of Piggott. Soon afterward, he made the decision to follow Jesus, a commitment that became the foundation of his life and ministry. He later attended Roanoke Bible College and, following graduation, accepted a call to serve a church in Richwood, Ohio.
While serving as a sponsor at church camp, Hubert met the love of his life, the former Lynn Karen Rodgers. Together, they began a lifetime devoted to serving the Lord. Over the years, they ministered in Richwood, Ohio; Sebring, Ohio; Burlington, Indiana; Barberton, Ohio; and Unionport, Ohio. Unionport became their primary place of ministry, where Hubert faithfully served not only the church family, but the entire community as well.
Hubert was deeply involved in community life. He was an active member of the Lions Club, where he served as tail twister, a Cub Scout leader, and a supporter of many local community events. For 25 years, he served with the volunteer fire department as a driver and pump operator, while also being known as a calm and steady voice during meetings. He volunteered with the reading program at Wayne Elementary School and was a dedicated blood donor, giving more than 13 gallons over the years.
He also faithfully served at Elkhorn Valley Christian Service Camp during Wilderness Weeks and later as the camp’s Night Watchman. During his years in Unionport, he learned to play the guitar and developed a deep love for bluegrass music. He became part of a group known as “Ed and the Gang,” which traveled to local nursing homes to perform for residents.
After retirement, Hubert and Karen moved to Dover, where they became active members of Dover Christian Church and continued their life of service. They also volunteered with Ohio’s Hospice.
His family, especially his grandchildren, will always remember his gift of peppermints, his quiet “good job” after completing their activities, his quiet sense of humor, and the familiar sight of him watching sporting events on mute while listening to bluegrass music.
Missing him here are his wife of nearly 58 years, Lynn Karen (Rodgers) Granger; children, Adam (Angie) of Crestline, Ohio, Ben (Abby) Granger, of Fredericktown, Ohio, Becky (Jim) Henson of Jefferson, Ohio, Melody (Travis Burdick) Granger; grandchildren, Makena Ellis Williams, Emma ( Dominique) Robinson, Zachary (Alyssa) Granger, Caden Granger, JJ (Robyn) Henson, Nate Henson, Zane Granger, and Caroline Henson; and great-grandchildren, Yari Williams, Deej Robinson, Reagan Granger, and Colt Robinson.
In addition to his parents, Hubert was preceded in death by his step-mother, Virginia; brother-in-law, Bill Gee; sister, Nancy (Granger) Gee; and grandsons, Colton and Cameron Granger.
Celebrations of life will be held in Dover and Unionport. Dates and times will be announced once arrangements have been finalized.
Memorial contributions in Hubert’s memory may be directed to International Disaster Emergency Service (I.D.E.S.), 355 Park 32 West Dr., Noblesville, IN46062 or online at ides.org/donationportal.
