Gene E. Barnes

Gene E. Barnes, 91, of Marysville, Ohio died Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Walnut Crossing Assisted Living in Marysville, following a period of declining health.

A son of the late Forest and Gladys (Edie) Barnes, Gene was born October 26, 1932 in Union Hospital at Dover and was a graduate of New Philadelphia High School. Following high school, Gene honorably served in the United States Army during the Korean War, then began a 32-year career of service with Greer Steel in Dover, Ohio. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf, or just spending time with his family. Along with his wife, Gene had formerly attended Sacred Heart Church in New Philadelphia and Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Marysville.

On May 14, 1955, Gene married the former Janet J. Williams, and together they shared over 54 years of marriage before her passing in March 2010. He is survived by his children, Greg (Marjorie) Barnes of Galena, Becky (Steve) Michels of Urbana, and Sue (Mike) Hupp of Huntsville; five grandchildren, Angela (Ryan) Milosh, Gregory (Kate) Barnes II, Lauren (Ian) Lange, Emily (Ben) Hoffman and Nicholas (Kelly) Hupp, along with 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Janet J. Barnes; a son, Daniel Barnes; daughter-in-law Mary Barnes; two brothers, Alfred Barnes and Wayne Barnes and four sisters, Lucille Endres, Evelyn Halloy, Florence Meek and Phyllis Levengood.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 18, 2024 beginning at 10 AM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia, where a funeral service celebrating Gene’s life will begin at 11 AM with Father Jeff Coning officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia where military honors will be provided by the New Philadelphia VFW Post 1445.
