Evelyn S. Hoffman of New Philadelphia has gone to be with her husband Dutch, in their heavenly reward. Evelyn died peacefully in her home Saturday morning at the age of 83, following an illness of seven months. Born at Crawfordsville, Indiana, June 3, 1923, Evelyn was a daughter of the late Russell Switzer and Lucille Murphy Switzer. She graduated from Crawfordsville High School. On December 5, 1944, she married the late Hilbert L. Hoffman, better known as “Dutch” to his friends. Together, they enjoyed camping and during their fifty-eight years of marriage have visited nearly all of the fifty United States. Evelyn was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, occasionally working as a beautician, and teaching children to swim as a volunteer with the YMCA. Upon her husband’s retirement, the couple owned and operated the Hoffman Rock Shop which specialized in Lapidary jewelry. The Hoffman’s left New Philadelphia for the warmer weather of Mesa, Arizona. Ultimately, they returned to Ohio in 2002, prior to Mr. Hoffman’s death in April, 2003. A longtime member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Evelyn served on the church Altar Society. Evelyn was also a familiar face at Tuscarawas County Senior Center card parties, where she enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, and trying just about any games of chance. She was especially grateful for the independence Senior Transportation Services provided, and forged special relationships with the drivers who cared so well for Evelyn and other passengers. Evelyn leaves behind two daughters, Susan Strauss of New Philadelphia, and Nancy (Donald) Guinn of Vancouver, Washington. Two grandsons, R. Lee (Margie) Strauss of New Philadelphia and A. J. (Taunya) Strauss of Nobelsville, Indiana. Two great-granddaughters, Evie and Lena Strauss, and a brother, Glenn “Bud” Switzer complete the family. Monsignor George J.
