Obituary

Eva Jane Gartrell, age 81, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully late Wednesday, November 12, 2025, while in the care of Ohio’s Hospice’s Truman House in New Philadelphia.

Born in Dover, Ohio, on March 27, 1944, Jane was a daughter of the late James D. Flowers and Florence (Campbell) Lengler.

After completing her education at New Philadelphia High School, Jane attended The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and on June 14, 1970, in the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia, she married John R. Gartrell. Together, the couple raised two sons.

Jane was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia and served as a member of the Altar Guild.  She was a life member of the Tuscarawas Arts Guild where she served as the Past-President and Secretary. Jane was a talented artist who loved working in all types of mediums which also included acrylic paints and wood burning. She loved painting for others and gifting many of her works. Professionally, Jane was employed by AVI, Ohio Industrial Supply Company, and Rex Pipe.

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, John R. Gartrell; her sons, Troy (Amy) Jones of Kentucky, and Daniel (Julie) Gartrell of Dennison; her grandchildren, Haley, Branden, Alex, Isabelle, Alex (Shayla), Brittney, and Ashley (Nicholas), as well as her great-grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews.

In addition to her mother and father, Jane was preceded in death by five sisters, Virginia. Margie, Molly, Barbara, and Nancy.

The family will greet guests on Sunday, November 16, 2025, from 1 – 3 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia, where Pastor Ryan Cockrill will lead a service in the funeral home’s chapel on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 11 AM. Burial will follow in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.

The family requests memorial contributions in Jane’s name to be directed to New Philadelphia First United Methodist Church, 201 W High Avenue, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663, or to Ohio’s Hospice Foundation, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
