Emblem

Elden D. Furbay, age 87, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully, Wednesday, June 18, 2025, while in Park Village Southside at New Philadelphia.

He was born in Dennison, Ohio on August 10, 1937, a son of the late Milton and Rebecca Edwards Furbay.

Elden was a 1955 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and in 1958 began a 40 year career with the Greer Steel company at Dover, where he held many positions until his retirement in 1998. In 1960, however, Elden was drafted into the United States Army. After completing his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Elden was assigned to the 611 at Fort Bliss, Texas and then shipped to Chiz, France where he worked as a Stock Records Clerk while the Berlin Wall was being built. He received an honorable discharge for his service in 1962.

A lifelong car fanatic, he could spot a classic from a mile away and never missed a good auto auction. After retiring, he found his happy place behind the wheel — helping out friends at Ferris, Chuck Nicholson, and R.B. Motors by driving dealer purchases. He was also a devoted coin collector and an enthusiastic collector of Texaco memorabilia and vintage toys.

Wherever he went, Elden made friends. He had a natural gift for connecting with people; If you knew Elden, you probably knew his stories and maybe even starred in a few of them. He was endlessly proud of his grandsons and never missed a chance to cheer them on in their school activities. He was also a loyal, steadfast, supporter of the New Philadelphia Band Program.

Elden lived his life through cars, stories, coffee, and a grin on his face.

He will be deeply missed by his sons, Chuck (Connie Sickels) Furbay, and Jeff (Tonya Knight) Furbay both of New Philadelphia; grandsons, Robert (Rachel) Sickels, Brandon Furbay, and Zach Furbay; a great-grandson, Blake Sickels, and his extended family, Fairy Burrier, Shelley (Rob) Gonci, Ron and Rita Jacoby, Becky Furbay, and numerous cousins.

In addition to his parents, Elden was preceded in death by his former wife, Barbara.

The family will greet guests on Sunday, June 22, 2025, from 2:00 – 5:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Brian Flood will lead a service celebrating Elden’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia with military honors given by the Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 VFW.
