Edwin A. McGlumphy, Sr., age 92, died peacefully early Saturday evening, April 13, 2024, at his home in Stone Creek, Ohio from natural causes.
Ed was born April 29, 1931, in Martins Ferry, Ohio as the only child of Alonzo Dewey McGlumphy and Agnes (Kesterson) McGlumphy. He was a 1949 graduate of Martins Ferry High School where he was a four-year letterman in basketball and an All-Eastern Ohioan and All-Ohio Valley first team pick in 1948-49. He was also a two-time state runner-up in tennis, losing to eventual Wimbledon champion Tony Trabert in both 1948 and 1949.
After high school, McGlumphy earned a full scholarship for both basketball and tennis at Washington & Jefferson College where he played both sports for four years and participated in ROTC. He graduated with a degree in Economics and earned his secondary teaching certificate. He entered the Army for two years after college and was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky during the Korean War.
He started his first teaching and basketball coaching stint during the 1956-57 school year at Stone Creek Jefferson High School. This began a storied 35-year career in both Ohio and Pennsylvania with notable stops at his alma mater in Martins Ferry Ohio, Hickory High School in Hermitage, Pennsylvania and Warren Area High School in Warren, Pennsylvania.
He piloted his teams to over 20 league, sectional, and district championships while accumulating 456 varsity head coaching wins. He was elected to the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984 and inducted into the Martins Ferry Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
In 1957, he married Patricia Lou (Hisrich) McGlumphy of Stone Creek, Ohio. They remained married for 53 years until her death in 2011. He is preceded in death by his wife Patricia, infant son Jason P. McGlumphy, and parents, Alonzo Dewey McGlumphy and Agnes (Kestersen). He was a devoted father to three sons, six grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
Ed is survived by sons, Dr. Edwin A. McGlumphy Jr. (Deborah Mendel) of Upper Arlington, Ohio, Michael V. McGlumphy of Dayton, Ohio, and Douglas J. McGlumphy (Jennifer Greer) of Stone Creek, Ohio; grandchildren, Joseph McGlumphy (Carolyn), Kellye McGlumphy (Nick Mastuserio), Mara McGlumphy, Max McGlumphy, Jacob McGlumphy, Jonah McGlumphy; and great-grandson, Greyson. He is also survived by multiple special brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Zion United Church of Christ Cemetery, Ragersville, Ohio followed immediately by a luncheon at the Tavern of Ragersville.
An additional Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 3, 2024 at the family farm.
