David Paul Mathews, 89, of Dover, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 19, 2025 in Hennis Care Center at Dover. He lived a full and enriching life that was marked by his dedication to both his country and his career.
Born in Ecorse, Michigan, David was the son of the late Raymond P. Mathews and Pauline T. Mathews Vannest and left high school during the Korean War, to serve in the United States Marine Corps, a decision that not only shaped his character but also allowed him to earn his High School diploma during his service. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1960, having developed a deep sense of duty and commitment to his country.
Professionally, David dedicated over 35 years of his life to Republic Steel in Canton, where he excelled as a steelworker. His strong work ethic and tenacity were traits that served him well in his career.
David was known for his warm personality and deep affection for animals, particularly dogs. He shared his home with four beloved pet dogs throughout his life, each leaving a special imprint on his heart. An avid reader, David had a particular fondness for Science Fiction and Fantasy Fiction. He often found excitement in the imaginative worlds crafted by his favorite authors, a hobby that sparked countless hours of enjoyment.
He is survived by his four children, David Mathews, Brian Mathews, Megan Mathews, and Buffy Mathews; ten grandchildren, Ceejay, Ryan, Daphne, Sofie Devlin, Katerina, Alex, Shayna, Macy, Jacob and a sister, Janet Incarnato.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Anntonette and a grandson, Jamie Mathews, also preceded him in death.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation care is to be provided by the Geib Funeral Center at Dover and a private burial will take place at a later date.
