Cheryl Lynn (Swaldo) Fickes, 80, of New Philadelphia, passed away early Monday, June 22, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born on November 25, 1945, in Goshen Township, Ohio, Cheryl was the daughter of the late Eugene and Mary Swaldo.
A 1964 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, Cheryl continued her education at Ohio State College of Cosmetology College, graduating in 1965. She then returned to Tuscarawas County and began a remarkable 52-year career where she developed some of her most cherished life-long friendships with many of her coworkers and clients.
Cheryl married her beloved husband Jack Fickes on August 6, 1966, and together they raised two children, instilling in them the value of integrity and hard work. Cheryl had boundless energy, lived life to the fullest, was the life of every party and loved to dance, had a gift for making friends, brought joy and happiness to everyone around her, and always gave more than she received (especially food).
Cheryl was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and volunteered for her children's activities when they were growing up and local charities. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her children and grandsons, including countless family vacations to the beach. Cheryl also travelled to many countries with her friends and members of her church.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Jack; her children, Jeffrey (Lynn) Fickes of Copley and Julie (Kevin) Fitzgerald of Dover; her grandsons, Merrick Fitzgerald, Braeden Fitzgerald, Chase Fickes, and Logan Fickes; a brother; and her beloved sister, Emmy. In addition to her parents, Cheryl was preceded in death by seven siblings.
The family will greet guests on Monday, June 29, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia with prayers beginning at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Jimmy Hatfield on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dover. Inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in New Philadelphia.
Memorial contributions may be made in Cheryl’s memory to Ohio’s Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
