Carl M. Vehre, Jr. age 94, of Cadiz and formerly of Strasburg, died Saturday, May 2, 2026, while in the care of the Harrison County Home, where he has resided for the past three years.
Born in Adena, Ohio on July 29, 1931, Carl was a son of the late Carl and Olive B. Sargent Vehre. After graduating from Adena High School, Carl joined the United States Army. He earned the rank of Sergeant and served in the 623rd Field Artillery Battalion known as “Morgan’s Raiders” during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge he served for as a member of the Army National Guard until 1959.
On January 17, 1953, Carl married his high school sweetheart, the former Betty Nameth. The couple spent the majority of their lives in the Boardman, Ohio area and in 1994, relocated to Strasburg. Betty died on November 27, 2012, as a result of an automobile accident.
Professionally, Carl was employed by LTV Steel in Youngstown where he worked security for more than three decades prior to his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the United Steelworkers Local 2163.
In their free time Carl and Betty enjoyed attending flea markets and garage sales hunting for antiques and making trips to Wheeling Island. Carl was a lifelong sports enthusiast who loved the Detroit Tigers, faithfully followed the Strasburg Lady Tigers Softball Team, and loved attending the activities of his nieces and nephews.
He will be missed by his brother-in-law, John (Cecilia) Nameth of Mentor, Ohio, sister-in-law Laura Nameth of Dubuque, IA, and sister-in-law, Jacqueline (Ralph) Dunkle of Tappan Lake.
He had a special relationship with his wife’s nieces and nephews who include; Derek (Gretchen) Nameth, Dawn (Nate) Weathers, Brian Dunkle, Darren (Teri) Dunkle, and Danielle (Jeremy) Walters as well as his own nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews also survive. He was particularly close to McKayla, Kayden and Kayne Dunkle, and Dylan and Daylee Walters.
His beloved cats, Tom and Jerry, complete Carl’s family.
In addition to his parents and wife, Carl was preceded in death by his siblings, John, Janet, and Marcia, and a brother-in-law, Jerry Nameth.
The family will greet guests on Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 10-11 AM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover where Chaplain Peter Bortz will lead a service celebrating Carl’s life beginning at 11 AM. Burial alongside his beloved wife will follow in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg where members of the Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the New Philadelphia VFW will render honors.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Harrison County Home for their excellent and attentive care to Carl while he was in their care.
