Betty J. Hattery, age 96, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully, early Saturday, December 13, 2025.
Born in Massillon, Ohio on August 23, 1929, Betty was a daughter of the late Andrew and Susan Sedjo Bednar. She was a graduate of Massillon-Washington High School and on April 26, 1949, married Clifford E. Hattery.
For many years, Betty cared for her family and later in life began working outside the home. She worked for a period of time for the Tuscarawas County Title Office and later worked Boulevard Cleaners until the age of 80. She also spent a number of years caring for her friend, Lola.
Betty was a longtime, devoted member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at New Philadelphia where she was involved in Ladies Bible Study, served as a greeter, and enjoyed church outings with her church family. She also loved hosting holiday events at her home and being surrounded by her family. She was an avid bowler having bowled at Boulevard Lanes Women’s League until the age of 80. She enjoyed yardwork, cheering on the Cleveland sports teams, especially the Indians and Cleveland Browns.
She is survived by two children, Cliff (Sue Long) Hattery and Jeff (Cathy) Hattery all of Strasburg; her grandchildren, Stacey Hattery, Amy Hattery, Lori McCallister, Sara Hattery, Philip (Amanda) Renicker and Chad Renicker; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Nancy (Dave) Miller of Massillon and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband in 1994, two daughters, Sherry Emig and Pam Renicker; siblings, Evelyn Kulick, Lois Tissot, Linda Smer, Andrew Bednar, II, Richard Bednar, Donald Bednar, and Gary Bednar.
The family will greet guests on Thursday, December 18, 2025 from 10-11 AM in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at New Philadelphia where Pastor Rob Eller will lead a celebration on Betty’s life at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover. A meal and fellowship will follow in the church social hall.
Betty’s last years were spent under the attentive care of her granddaughter, Stacey and her “adopted” granddaughter, Melinda. Her family would like to extend a special thank you for their excellent care and compassion.
