Barbara Ellwood

Barbara Ann Ellwood, age 91, of Hennis Care Center, Dover died Thursday, May 1, 2025, following a period of declining health.

Born in Dover, Ohio on January 2, 1934, Barbara was a daughter of the late Clarence Dean and Elizabeth Josephine Hootman Hawkins.

Barb attended New Philadelphia High School and worked for many years at Bond’s Shoe Store at New Philadelphia and raised her family of three children.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at New Philadelphia. No one ever left Barb’s house hungry as she loved to share her cooking talents with those she welcomed into her home. A meal, a cup of coffee and special desserts were always ready when you visited Barb. She loved gardening, mowing and keeping her house in perfect order.

Surviving are her children, James A. (Laura) Breehl of New Philadelphia, Kathy (Raymond) McIntire of Stone Creek, Tim and Kathy Ellwood of Gnadenhutten, Rick, Amy Ellwood of Stone Creek and Mark and Amy Ellwood of Port Washington; a daughter-in-law, Gaylene Breehl of Midvale; her sister, Judith Cochran of New Philadelphia; a sister-in-law, Marti Hawkins of Indiana; grandchildren, Sarah (BJ) Young, Matt Breehl, Aber McIntire and Samantha McIntire; numerous great-grandchildren, as well as her nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Barb was preceded in death by her first husband, James J. Breehl and her second husband, William Ellwood; a son, Richard Lee Breehl; a brother, Richard Hawkins, and two grandchildren, Joshua Breehl, Shelly Marie Breehl.

A private graveside service will be held in the Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia. The Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia is handling arrangements.
