Alvin Ross Cline, born on May 26, 1949, in Coshocton, Ohio, was unexpectedly called home to his LORD and Creator on January 29, 2026, in Strasburg, Ohio.
He is survived by his “snugglebunny,” Natalie, his wife of forty-two years; and his children Joe, (Linda), John (Stacey), Justin, and Natalie “Cuppy.” He will be forever missed by his three grandchildren, Lila, Reis, and Tatum, and his favorite granddog, Cherrick. Al is also survived by his dear brother whom he loved and told so, Charles (Treva) and family. Al was preceded in death by his father, John Galen, his mother, Wanda Nadine, and his brother, John Galen II.
Al grew up on a farm in Bolivar, Ohio and graduated from Fairless High School in Navarre followed by Malone College in 1971. He spent several years in Alaska with the U.S. Army–a beautiful place he enjoyed. After serving in the army, he earned a second degree from Walsh University.
He found himself working for Burroughs Corp. While working in New Jersey, thanks to coinciding use of the photocopier, he met Natalie Miller (soon to be Cline). They married in 1983. Life in New Jersey was short lived, but their love was not. They spent six years in Michigan before moving to Ohio as a family of six. The nineties were a blur of raising kids, starting his own business, and family trips.
Cancer in his fifties led to a mellowing of his already amiable disposition, as well as a change in career to nursing–a job in which he took great pride. This pride paled to that he had for his kids as they grew into adults. He loved a good joke or wisecrack, especially from one of his kids and even at his own expense.
In his post-nursing era, Al spent many happy years as inn-keeper and tea-host extraordinaire, running the Garver House Bed and Breakfast with his cherished wife. They took memorable trips to Ireland, Yellowstone, numerous bed and breakfasts across the country and were active in their church. Al loved good food (and so-so food) and the outdoors, but he loved his family more than anything.
His family weeps, for the length of Al’s days were not enough, but we weep not without hope as we know, John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”
Al’s visitation will be at Geib Funeral Home–5600 North Wooster Ave, Dover, Ohio from 6-8PM Monday, February 2, 2026.
His memorial service at St.Peter’s Church–3640 Oldtown Valley Road, New Philadelphia, Ohio. Tuesday February 3,2026 at 11 am with lunch to follow.
Come as you are. Both services will be casual, as Al would have wished–his family will be sporting his signature flannel and jeans look.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of the Homeless of Tuscarawas County, 211 East High Avenue New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
