Sophia C. Durbin, of Dover, and formerly of Bolivar, passed away at the Inn at Northwood in Dover on Saturday morning, May 19, 2018, one day before her 84th birthday.

Born May 20, 1934, she was the daughter of the late David E. and Beatrice C. (Forney) Owens.

After graduating from New Philadelphia High School, Sophia married the late Wesley G. Durbin on November 22, 1956.

Sophia’s professional career included employment at Graef Ford, Klines Potato Chips, and ultimately with J.C. Penney in Canton where she retired as an auditor.

She greatly enjoyed her time outdoors gardening. Sophia also had a love for crocheting, sewing her children’s clothing, canning and reading. Most importantly, her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was of greatest importance. In her children’s youth, Sophia was a Tusky Valley Band Booster. She also gave of her time to church activities. However, her grandchildren, and later great-grandchildren, were the pride and joy of her life.

Sophia will be deeply missed by her children including Brenda (Darrell) (Durbin) James of Bolivar, Brian (significant other, Kimberly) Durbin of Canton, Bruce L. (Deborah) Durbin of Bolivar, and Bonnie J. (Troy) Link of Bolivar; her grandchildren, Mallory (Joshua), Bryce (close friend, Lisa Marie), Marissa (Dan), Michael (Katlyn), Matthew (Olivia), Jared, and Juliana; her great-grandchildren, Elaina Sophia and Caroline Nicole; her sister, Laura (Richard) Haynam of Canton; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover on Tuesday May 22, 2018 from 5 to 7 PM. Pastor Bill Eckert will lead a service celebrating Sophia’s life on Wednesday at 11 AM in the Geib Funeral Center. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.

Sophia also had a deep and personal faith that guided her throughout her life. Please direct memorial contributions in Sophia’s memory to Bolivar United Methodist Church, PO Box 435, Bolivar, OH 44612.

To the 4 B’s (as your mother used to sign her cards) — I didn’t know Aunt Sophie well, but I remember her as loving, kind and funny. May your memories comfort you during this difficult time. I’m thinking of you all and send my love.
