Robert C. Vaughn, 78, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in Union Hospital on Wednesday evening, September 20, 2017, following a period of declining health.

Born in Cleveland on July 1, 1939, Bob was the son of the late Courtney Alfred and Vella Bell (Young) Vaughn. Bob completed his formal education at Stone Creek High School.

Bob shared his gifts and talents in a variety of industries, but he loved serving with the New Philadelphia Fire Department and being a co-owner of the former Quaker Ambulance Service. Bob worked 20 years at Sherman Drilling and ultimately retired from Vaughn’s Garden Center which he and his wife, Carolyn, owned and operated for 15 years. In retirement, he continued to work at the garden center and for Sears.

Bob was also a New Philadelphia Auxiliary police officer, a mounted deputy, and worked with the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Department.

In his free time, Bob enjoyed his trains, woodworking, antique shopping with his sister, flying his RC planes with his friends, fishing, and being with his grandchildren. He was also a devoted Mobile Meals volunteer.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, the former Carolyn Cua, whom he married on April 30, 1980; his sons, Rick (Gail) Vaughn of Bolivar, Doug (Tina) Vaughn of Canton, Chris (Gail) Vaughn of New Philadelphia and Rob (Tina) Vaughn of Newcomerstown; his step-daughters, Sue (Shaun) Creager of Newcomerstown, Kim (Hal) Harmon of Dover, and Wendy (Bill) Kennedy of Uhrichsville; grandchildren, Kyle, Alyssa, and Andrew Vaughn; step-grandchildren, Tracy Burkey, Gavin Blankenship, Abby Creager, Kolton and Kayla Nay, Noah and Rees Creager, Chloe Kennedy, Lisa Snyder; and great-grandchildren, Elijah, Leah, and Lucas; and step-great-grandchildren, Devon, Courtney, Raina, Lincoln, Brendan, Cameron, and Nina; several step-great-great-grandchildren; and his sister, Shirley Kidd of Cambridge.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanie Vaughn Pickering.

Family will receive friends in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will begin Tuesday morning at 10 am in the funeral home chapel followed by inurnment at Evergreen Burial Park.

Memorial contributions in Bob’s memory may be directed to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.

Carolyn and Family, As I look back to truly important moments and influential people that have shaped and allowed me to be successful today Bob and Carolyn are without a doubt at the top of the list. Bob was a great man who for some reason allowed me to work summers at the garden center for many years and those years left a lasting impact. My condolences to all of you and I can only hope that future generations get to benefit from the influence of a great man like Bob. Bob was truly one of the good ones. Kyle

Summers at Bob and Carolyn's garden center were special. Delivering mulch in the red dump truck. Watering trees every morning. Lunch in the store because it was raining or too hot out. I loved when it was so busy that Wendy, Kim, and Sue would come help out. Some of my best memories were created at that garden center thanks to Bob and Carolyn. Not to mention I got to work with my future wife.

We have many fond memories of Grandpa Bob, one of which my daughter vividly captured was the Christmas that we got to see Santa Clause, he came in the house standing obver 7 ft tall, to the little ones that was unforgettable! Grandpa Bob was always a thoughtful caring man, and loved his family greatly. He will always be loved and missed. Carolyn I pray that your heart will heal knowing he is waiting for you in heaven and smiling down on you and his family everyday. We won't say goodbye. It will always be, "Until we meet again"...
