Rhoda Y. Jenkins, 90, of New Philadelphia, passed away July 30, 2018 in the Community Hospice Truman House.

Born in New Philadelphia on April 14, 1928, she was the daughter of the late John McKinley and Edith (Griffith) Light.

After graduating from New Philadelphia High School where she was a cheerleader, she married her lifelong friend and companion, the late Laverne Buster “Bup” Jenkins, the captain of the Dover Tornadoes football team.

Bup and Rhoda were blessed with the birth of three sons, who reflect what she instilled in them: work ethic, integrity and a caring heart. When Rhoda and Bup joined the dance floor on Saturday evenings, they captured the attention of those around them. Rhoda also bowled for 50 years, and was a talented quilt maker and seamstress. She made many of her own clothes. Additionally, she walked or rode her bicycle every day.

She will be deeply missed by her sons, Daniel “Dan” (Tonya) Jenkins of New Philadelphia, Robert “Bob” (Joe LeGrand) Jenkins of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Richard (Cynthia) Jenkins of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Jeremy (Dusty) Jenkins of South Carolina, Jason (Larissa) Jenkins and Matthew Jenkins, both of New Philadelphia, Aaron Jenkins of San Francisco, Keri (Duke) Dailey of Nashport, Ohio, Michael Fisher of Moundsville, West Virginia, Matthew Fisher of Dover, and Nathan Fisher of New Philadelphia; her brother, Dr. John (Roxanne) Light of Columbus; and numerous great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in passing by her grandson, Jeremy Fisher; and her brother and sister-in-law, George and Opal Light.

Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Thursday August 2, 2018 from 5 to 7 PM. A service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Friday, August 3, 2018 beginning at 11 AM. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Friends and family are invited to the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home, following the committal service where a luncheon will be held.

Memorial contributions in Rhoda’s memory may be directed to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.

I first met Rhoda as I was an 18 year old kid. Her grandson Jason (Jay) and I ran around together starting off at that age. She was always very kind to me, and the rest of the kids that would stop by to hang out, or work on our cars in their heated garage. Funny how our cars always seemed to be broke down in the middle of the winter, but we knew if we asked, we’d have a place to fix them. Or, we’d hole up in the spare bedroom to watch TV in the afternoons. I miss those times.....She was an exceptional lady, one of kind, and the world is a bit darker now that she’s passed on. But we can be rest assured that she is together with Bup again, looking down on us all. We can be happy for that aspect.
